Thanks to all who attended our show at the end of August; we hope you enjoyed the event! Here are a few photos to recap the show.
Our Spring Summer newsletter is ready! This issue is loaded with some rich news stories and fascinating family history...in fact, we're going to continue the cover story of the Riesterer family history with a followup article in our next issue. There was so much good material, we could hardly fit it all in one issue! Here’s a preview showing a few pages from this latest issue.
Our 2020 Summer newsletter is out! This COVID-19 edition features a number of projects some of our members have been working on leading up to and during lockdown. There’s lots more inside this edition, become a member for access to the complete edition! As a bonus, here’s the text from my ‘COVID-revised’ rendition of the speech that led to the phrase if-by-whiskey. Via Wikipedia, this famous 1952 speech by Noah S. "Soggy" Sweat, Jr., a young lawmaker from the U.S. state of Mississippi, was on the subject of whether Mississippi should continue to prohibit (which it did until 1966) or finally legalize alcoholic beverages:
My friends, I had not intended to discuss this controversial subject at this particular time. However, I want you to know that I do not shun controversy. On the contrary, I will take a stand on any issue at any time, regardless of how fraught with controversy it might be. You have asked me how I feel about whiskey. All right, here is how I feel about COVID-19: If when you say COVID-19 you mean the evil deadly virus, the communist bioweapon, the world’s greatest pandemic that defiles industry, upsets hospitals, destroys the nation, creates misery and poverty, yea, literally takes the breathe from the mouths of little children; if you mean the evil flu that topples the Christian man and woman from the pinnacle of righteous, gracious living into the bottomless pit of degradation, and despair, and shame and helplessness, and hopelessness, then certainly I am against it. But, if when you say COVID-19 you mean a natural biological progression, a turning point for global priorities, a time to refocus on the lives and care of seniors, a time to dethrone the billionaires of the world, and give back to those in need; if you mean the stimulant that resets racism and inequality around the world, and if you mean the event which enables man to work from home, increasing the time spent with his family, thus magnifying joy and happiness, if only for a little while, and in spite of life's great tragedies, and heartaches, and sorrows, which still occur, if you mean that moment when the sale of a vaccine is distributed around the world to provide remedy for all our ailing sons, daughters, fathers, and mothers, when the entire world can celebrate together in harmony, then certainly I am for it. This is my stand. I will not retreat from it. I will not compromise.
