Architecture students from across the North came together to work on a one day intensive project. The students were asked to bring a painting of a city, which was then used to direct design strategies for Stockport's future.
Tom Jefferies, Head of MSA, concluded 'The overarching issues of connectivity and distinctiveness within a legible urban structure are critical to the future of Stockport. The need to re-engage with the River Mersey was a consistent theme and could form the basis of a strategic reappraisal of the town centre urban space. The winning proposal developed this convincingly and radically, re-engaging the historic city core with the river, recasting the Merseyway Shopping Centre as Atlantis.'.
An event is now being developed to project images of the charrette on to buildings around Stockport in the winter.
The project was designed by Laura Sanderson, Tom Jefferies and RIBA NW, and funded by Manchester School of Architecture, RIBA NW, Stockport MBC, Aedas, RIBA Bookshops & Ibstock.
The booklet was edited by Laura Sanderson (MSA) & myself.
