I'm pretty sure gendered pronouns to refer to permanents is only for planeswalkers. The cycle might be the first time they've appeared for that purpose on a non-planeswalker card though.

Tri-color Gods would mainly service Commander players as they greatly limit the kinds of decks that can play them.
Monocolor Gods go in one monocolor deck, four dual-color decks and three tri-color decks as opposed to just a single tri-color deck.
There are a lot of different Magic players to balance and in this case we weighted the decision to maximize their use among various formats.
