To my future children
Once upon a time, before you were a thought in my head, we lived in a different world. We grew up being told that the fighting was done. We were one nation, under God. There was no more north and south. The slaves were free and everyone had an equal chance at a happy and prosperous life. And you were a child and things were good. Then we grew up a little, and we started going to school, and we learned all the terrible things that once happened in our great country. We were confused, why would anyone hate someone for the color of their skin, or if they liked boys, or girls, or if they were Muslim or Jewish? But, we accepted that the world was funny sometimes, but we didn't have to be funny too. And then we got older. And we went on to high school. And we saw all the "funny" people in real life. Your best friend got beat up because he was gay, and your family couldn't understand why your boyfriend was white. They always asked why you couldn't find a nice Hispanic boy. They didn't understand that you loved him, and it didn't matter where he was from. And then you got a little older. School was finished, and college wasn't working. You decided to join the military. You did everything right, got the best scores, and the recruiter said "I don't sign up girls, go talk to someone else". So you did, and he told you, " women want everything handed to them." " you can't have that job, women aren't allowed." " never walk anywhere alone, not even the bathroom.". You weren't much older at this point, but you joined the military, got your degree, because what society said you could... But you were still afraid to stop for gas on your way home for leave. Your boyfriend said to stop being silly, you were going to be fine, but he didn't understand that "he" was going to be fine, "you" weren't welcome in this town. "You" didn't deserve to be with "him" in the eyes of others. He didn't see the looks people gave "you" when he held your hand. He didn't understand how scared you were when you saw the news. He didn't understand how much you feared for the kids you didn't have yet. Because he learned the same things in school you did, and he saw the same injustice you saw, but he never had to be afraid of the same things that lurked in the shadows. To my future kids, I love you and I will never lie to you. Life will be hard. Because at the end of the day, someone will say you don't belong. Someone will try to take away your rights. And someone will hurt you. To my future children, I already love you, but you will be born Hispanic, and you will be dark skinned and you will have to fight for everything you want in life. But I will fight with you, and I'll be there when you need to cry. I'll be your biggest supporter, and your partner in crime. I'm working now so you have a better start in life, and I'm fighting now, so these things will never happen to you. But when they do, I'll be there to explain and comfort you. I love you already, and you're not even here
