Exercise and Functionality
What is the most important thing we can do to help our bodies cope with every day stress? Exercise! Exercise helps your body sleep, get energy, calm your emotions down, help with mental stress and physical stress, and functionality. Functionality is a big thing that we’re going to be talking about today.
When you go to exercise, what is it you’re looking to do? Are you looking to lose weight because the media or your friends and family told you that you’re too fat? Like mine did? Are you working out to make yourself look sexier? Basically what I am asking is are you doing it based on looks or are you trying to perform to the best you can perform.
You see I went to Michigan dunes with my buddy Alex, we talked and talked and talked about work, psychology, you name it. But when we started climbing the dunes, it got hard. I am a smoker, which I am trying my hardest to quit that habit, so my lungs were suffering. My heart rate kept going up to where I would start to get dizzy and it was not good on my body. I pushed my body to the max, almost passing out from that. You know, even Alex asked me if I was okay. But looking at him being able to run up the dunes, run on the sand even, barely out of breath while I was huffing and puffing trying to get up that dune, it made me stop and think why do I want to exercise?
It hurts my lungs and it makes my body feel like it’s about to pass out. Then it came to me. Functionality. I want to be able to increase the skills that I have now. I am very strong and I am very motivated. You give me a challenge I’m gonna beat that challenge with 120% effort. But even though I can still get to where I wanna be, it’s a struggle to get there. And it’s because of the smoker part of me and because I am overweight.
Yeah overtime I can achieve the goal I put into place, but at the same time I wouldn’t be able to run up those dunes and take complete control of that freedom being able to do that type of exercise without much effort.
We need to look at exercise not to lose weight because the media told me or because my parents told me or because I want to look sexier. No, what we need to do is go out there and improve the skill sets we already have. Pursue the strength, the speed, what ever you are good at already, improve it and your body will definitely agree with you saying you know this is what we need to do. So my challenge for you is get up off your butt, stop reading and go out and do some things that you have a skill set with while exercising. Lift some weights, or even if you’re in an office space reading my post, do some walking around or get up stretch your feet. Do something. It’s not about losing weight to look sexy, it is all about functionality.
