40: think of a piece of jewelry you own: what’s it’s story? does it have any meaning to you?

The necklace I’m wearing right now is a gold silhouette of a lotus flower that I got in college—RISD is just down the street from my alma mater, and they had the best student and alumni craft fairs. Going into senior year, most of my jewelry collection had been stolen out of my dad’s car on the drive up, so I kindly informed Boyfriend that he would be getting me jewelry of some sort for Chanukah that year. (We’d been together for like 2.5 years at that point, and he knew I was sad about the theft, so this was not an especially dramatic or unreasonable a request one way or another.)

He was game but very nervous, not really having bought jewelry before. So we moseyed down to the RISD holiday fair that December and I showed him stuff I liked and tried to explain why. In the process, I found this necklace...but insisted on purchasing it for myself, because a) I liked and wanted it promptly, and also needed the chain adjusted by the artist in the moment and b) it would’ve been way too easy to just let him jump in. Luckily, it turned out that he’s great at buying jewelry (at least for me, specifically) and the necklace he eventually procured is one I still wear all the time—as are various other necklaces and earrings he’s gifted over the years :)

50: what’s an odd thing you collect?

10. How would you describe your writing process?

It’s pretty straightforward. I usually workshop an idea in my head for a while, breaking the story and rerunning a few key scenes or pieces of dialogue that help establish the thing before jotting down a hybrid outline/notes braindump. (I’m very much an architect more than a gardener.) And then I just go and write it.

I almost always start at the beginning and continue straight through to the end, with the exception of some five-things stories (which can get rearranged, or I know what parts 1, 3, and 4 are but haven’t figured out 2 yet, or something) or the occasional Big Bang story where the challenge requires submitting different scenes at checkpoints and you gotta follow the rules.

That first time when you brought TREAT YO’ SELF cakes for all of the newly minted DCPG!

The second time I felt compelled to tag something “fundaaaaaa”—the first time was bitching about the HIMYM finale, but the second was in April 2014 when this picture of S. Satan appeared and we eventually had to dub him as such. It occurs to me now that we’ve never dubbed Sam Heughan anything, even though he is also a life-ruiner with rude cheekbones.

That time I was in D.C. right after Thanksgiving (as I often am, being as that’s where the in-laws are) and we planned to get brunch ‘cause I figured the other DCPGers would be busy with family stuff and instead you rallied the whole crew to come out for waffles! Infinite love for @clubgetright and @spunkyar, who are also top humans.

I can’t remember if that the was the same Thanksgiving as when we verified @stillscape‘s existence (she is mystical!) because we’ve done that a couple of times. But always with waffles.

That other time I was in D.C. right after Thanksgiving and Boyfriend had to work so you escorted me back to your apartment and indoctrinated me with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. I couldn’t get into the show but I totally enjoyed your hospitality and also your Turkish tea.

18. Tell us about an early childhood memory.

This came up in a different ask meme a while ago, and I will give the same answer: either eating cheese sandwiches with my parents in the hospital when my next-youngest sister was born or the image of my Playmobil dollhouse (specifically the flower pots) in their townhouse in Philly where we lived until I was 3. 

25. Do you prefer to use pen or pencil?

Pen, definitely. I like the look of it better (especially in different colors in high school! Remember glitter gel pens) and ballpoint pens, at least, smudge less than pencil does if you’re a lefty, which I am.

37. What would you do if you found $50 on the ground?

Probably keep the cash, unless there was an obvious way to figure out who’d dropped it? Like if it was in an admission-limited building or I saw it fall out of someone’s bag, then I’d give it back to the person or to like the front desk. But just a random $50 bill on the ground is probably coming home with me.
