Barton house was unusually calm.
Too calm.
Malachi was sitting in the living room with his parents, leaning back on the couch while Felicia talked about something involving schedules and flights.
Loren nodded along, occasionally adding a comment, while Malachi half-listened, scrolling on his phone.
You, on the other hand, were in the kitchen.
Very aware of what you were about to do.
You’d been quiet for way too long.
Malachi hadn’t noticed yet—until suddenly—
“MALACHI. DANIEL. BARTON.”
Your voice echoed through the house.
It wasn’t sweet.
It wasn’t calm.
It was sharp, loud, and carried the exact tone of someone who was beyond disappointed.
Every single person in the living room froze.
Malachi’s phone slipped out of his hand and landed face-down on the couch.
Felicia’s eyes widened instantly. “Oh my—”
Loren sucked in a breath. “That was… the full name.”
Malachi slowly sat up. “Why did she say it like that?”
From the kitchen, you continued, your voice just as loud and stern.
“Can you come in here for a second?”
Felicia grabbed Loren’s arm. “Nope.”
“I’ve heard that tone before,” Loren said, standing up immediately. “That’s not for us.”
Malachi looked between them. “Wait—what did I do?”
Felicia shook her head. “Honey, if I don’t know, that’s worse.”
Loren patted Malachi’s shoulder. “Good luck, son. Apologize first. Ask questions later.”
“But—” Malachi started.
Too late.
They were already walking away.
“We’re gonna… check on something upstairs,” Felicia said quickly.
“Yes,” Loren nodded. “Something very far away from whatever this is.”
Their bedroom door shut, leaving Malachi alone in the living room, heart racing.
He stared toward the kitchen like he was approaching his own execution.
“Babe?” he called carefully. “Why are you yelling?”
“JUST COME HERE, MALACHI.”
He winced.
“Okay—okay, I’m coming,” he said, hands up as he walked into the kitchen.
You were standing by the counter, arms crossed, jaw set, eyes locked on him.
He swallowed. “I swear if I forgot something—”
You took a step closer.
“Do you know,” you started, voice still loud and intense, “what I’ve been thinking about all day?”
Malachi shook his head slowly. “No…?”
You pointed at him. “Do you know how long I’ve been holding this in?”
He panicked. “Babe, I’m so sorry. Whatever it is, I didn’t mean to—”
You cut him off, voice raising again.
“Malachi Daniel Barton—”
He flinched. “Please don’t say it again.”
“—I cannot believe,” you continued, staring him down, “that you would just exist like this.”
He blinked. “…Exist?”
“Yes,” you said firmly. “Walking around. Being you.”
He looked utterly confused. “I feel like I’m missing something important.”
You took another step closer, your tone suddenly shifting—still loud, but softer underneath.
“Because I love you.”
He froze.
“I love the way you laugh,” you continued. “I love the way you pretend you’re not dramatic when you absolutely are. I love how you make me feel safe. And I love you so much it actually makes me mad sometimes.”
Silence.
Malachi stared at you, then let out a shaky laugh. “You did all that… for that?”
You nodded. “I wanted to get your attention.”
He stepped forward and pulled you into his arms, burying his face in your shoulder.
“You scared me to death,” he laughed. “My parents thought I committed a crime.”
From upstairs, Loren yelled, “Are we calling a lawyer or are we good?”
Malachi sighed loudly. “We’re good!”
Felicia peeked over the railing. “No one’s in trouble?”
You smiled sweetly. “Nope.”
She squinted. “You used the full name.”
“I know,” you said. “Sorry.”
Felicia laughed. “Oh, honey… that was evil.”
Malachi kissed your temple and whispered, “I love you too. But if you ever yell my full name like that again, I might actually pass out.”
You grinned. “Worth it.”
