The Radio Isotope

SUMMARY

The Eternal Warden star cluster is home to thousands of ghosts. Empty carcasses of VoidBreakers, massive singularity-powered spaceships, drift in the empty space between the Center, where most of the population lives, and the Edges, where the inhabitants of scattered outposts try to survive. The Age of Exploration is over. The Imperator and the Crimson Lady were the last two VoidBreakers, and now they are gone. But a small archeological expedition in the outskirts of the Between picked up a distress signal, coming from somewhere in the wreckage. Nua is the only survivor of the expedition, and she needs to know who sent the signal. The Captain of the Radio Isotope has lived a long life in the Edges, most of it outside of the law, and made a lot of enemies. Even as he tries to make an honest living for the sake of his crew, money is tight and his past catches up. With no other choice, he accepts a scavenging job in the Between, and finds himself with a stowaway telling strange tales of distress signals and eerie melodies.

CHARACTERS

The Captain [ch : captain] A cold and stoic man, he knows a lot about the Eternal Warden and its legends. Though his crew doesn't know much about his past, they know he is running from something.

Jill [ch : jill] The Radio Isotope is her ship, a decommissioned rescue vessel she repaired and repurposed with her father. She fled with the Captain when pirates attacked her home, and she longs to go back.

Etha [ch : etha] She had always dreamed of adventure and jumped on board the first ship that would take her sibling and her. Second in command to the Captain, she will follow him to the ends of the universe and never look back.

Meden [ch : meden] Ael followed aer sister, because ael loved her more than ael was scared of space. Now the ship's doctor, ael still doesn't really feel at home.

Nua [ch : nua] A pilot for hire in the Center, she was brought on an archeological expedition as a last minute replacement. A decision that will steal two years of her life and strand her on the other side of the Between, stuck in the Edges, a strange melody in her mind.

The Lieutenant [ch : lieutenant] A gifted and very lucky pilot, he wanders in the Edges in search of the ultimate challenge. And he is starting to think that maybe, just maybe, he might have the skills to venture in the Between.

The Emperor [ch : emperor] The legendary captain of the Imperator, the ghost of the Warden, the protector of the Edges. Their legend ended in blood and fire when the Imperator and the Crimson Lady collided.

Wënn [ch : wenn] Once second in command to the Emperor, now a dock worker on a small station, she tries to protect her family and her home from pirates incursions. She survived the tragedy of the Imperator, but the voice of the Emperor haunts her.

Raki [ch : raki] A shipyard worker who died during the construction of the Imperator. An independant bounty hunter looking for her way home. A ghost in the Emperor's shadow. A hand reaching out to Wënn. A voice calling for help.

The space pirates of the Radio Isotope as regular pirates ! It’s a lot of fun to design them as normal humains.

(Part two) the weirdest animal Geoff came home to find, was the time Gavin and Michael got together to buy a penguin online, and didn’t want to get rid of it when it actually showed up. They relented a few days later a donated it to the zoo(don’t ask me how) because they realised it wasn’t going to be happy with a bathtub full of ice forever. Ryan also once “found” a white tiger cub. 

Okay I love this for two reasons; first: The idea of the FAHC becoming this group that zoos and animal rights groups turn to when they either need new animals for a breeding program, or when they know about a seedy exotic dealer. Like, well law enforcement will take too long to get on this, but there is another option. And the other option is the crew that basically runs the entire city. When they’re approached with offers or requests they tend to agree as long as there’s nothing else big on the table. But consider zoo heists.

Two: While I’m certain they bring in some ridiculous animals, consider when Gavin does find one of those stray cats, but it turns out to be remarkably well behaved. He keeps it tucked into his room and is so careful about caring for it that it means he’s not going on as many coding or planning binges for days at a time. And so the cat gets to stay. 

And then I can imagine Ryan with one of the most intricately set up fish tanks, water levels perfectly balanced and the most gorgeous fish and plants you’ve ever seen. He’s meticulous about the damned thing, cleaning and testing the water constantly. It’s always the most surprising thing people find when they go into his room for the first time.

Species swap with the Radio Isotope and Imperator crews! Inspired by Ryoko Kui's art for Dungeon Meshi of course, it was a great exercise and helped me refine how Armisian and Isshan look and tentatively settle on a base for KseIn designs!

[StarDancer Radio Isotope]

Originally part of a fleet of rescue ships, the Radio Isotope fell in disrepair when the fleet was decommissioned. She found her way to Jill's father, who started heavily modifying her to turn her into a home for his family. Unfortunately, after an attack on the shipyard the Radio Isotope was being repaired in, Jill had to flee with the ship and this strange captain she had just met.

Equipped with six elegant yet powerful engines, the Radio Isotope is fast for a StarDancer-class ship. Her wormhole generator only needs a short two weeks rest period between jumps, and her speed, her lack of visible weaponry and her reinforced hull make her a good smuggling ship, capable of swiftly slipping away from pursuers or losing them in rough environments.
