and it’s like,

there’s nothing special about eating lunch with your friends in the school cafeteria

or there shouldn’t be, anyway,

because when your boy instinctively passes you his share of tater tots because he knows you want them more, and grabs the rest of your meatloaf because he knows you hate food waste but hate mystery meat more...

well. maybe that’s when you realize how in love you really are.

and maybe your boy doesn’t notice just how quiet you’ve gotten until everyone else is already up and headed to the trash bins with their trays

(because you’re still replying, but it’s short answers and you cannot stop staring at him and the way his eyes go wide in surprise or how his smile is instant whenever he turns to look at you)

and maybe he asks what’s up

and you know, he’s already said it. he said it so early that sometimes you think he said it before you even went on your first date, but you know that can’t have happened because he said it at a bowling alley, after you crinkled your nose at a disappointing roll of the ball.

he’s already said it.

but you haven’t.

and he asks you what’s up,

and you say, with a gentler tone than the one at dress rehearsal when you first knew that this was going to happen in your future—

“...i love you.”

“Well, maybe he’s one of those people who’s better at communicating in person.”

“I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but can we get back to reviewing for the midterm?”

“Everyone just needs to chill, alright?”
