Submerged in Contradictions || Drabble
The silence in the house seemed to echo far more loudly than Megan's cries had done the previous week. Doe knew she ought to be grateful for the fact that Megan had finally emerged from her room and had stopped crying for small amounts of time. More than that, she was showing signs of life and awareness that had been lacking for two weeks. She should've smiled, should've breathed a sigh of relief, but she couldn't do either of those things and once again she let the guilt and selfishness creep over her for letting something so stupid bother her when she was really the lucky one.
And Baby Makes Three, Part 3 || AU Jarfish
âMatt told you guys to come over, didnât he?â Doe stood at the doorway to the kitchen, hand hand on her swollen belly and the other resting on her hips in what may have once been a threatening manner but was now just comical.
âWhat? We canât just want to spend time with our best mate?â Megan smirked at her before walking into the kitchen and pulling a piece of chocolate from the bowl Doe kept hidden behind the salad bowls in one of the cabinets.
âOi! Put that back!â
Sirius came up to Doe, openly staring at her belly. âGood Godric, Jarvis was right. Youâre about to burst.â Doe reached out and smacked him against the side of his head.
âI knew he asked you to come watch me, that prat.â She moved back to the kitchen counter, picking up the bowl of chocolate batter and pouring it into the muffin tins before placing them in the oven. âYou donât get any of these though, sorry. Theyâre for me.â She turned back to look at them as she licked the chocolate off the spoon.
âGreedy cow,â muttered Sirius. The spoon flew out of Doeâs hand and towards his head at the same time that Megan leaned over to smack him. âMatt owes me for putting up with the pair of you right now.â
If I Should Tumble, If I Should Fall || Closed/Megan
Doe stumbled out of the Ravenclaw common room, narrowly avoiding an unwanted conversation with some faceless person who had called out to her. She didnât stop to see who it was, didnât give a damn who it was and couldnât be bothered to speak to anyone even if she did know. She ran through the hallways, desperate to reach her dorm as quickly as possible. The harder she ran the louder her heart beat and the easier it was to block out the horrible things sheâd said to Matt and the equally horrible image in her mind. She only stopped once she reached the fifth floor. It was close enough to Gryffindor that she knew she was nearly safe but she still had time to calm herself before walking into the common room and facing the unwanted stares of her housemates.
She paused in one of the tiny alcoves with a wide-open window overlooking the grounds. The cold air coming through hit her face harshly, reminding her that everything that had just happened was real. She pulled in a deep breath and raised both hands, rubbing them over her face. Thatâs when she remembered the ring on her finger, which shone in the light streaming from the window, the tiny gems mocking her as they sparkled. The tears began to fall before she even knew what was happening.
The Stars, the Moon, They Have All Been Blown Out, You Left Me In the Dark || Closed
The Headâs Tower was cold and Dorcas couldnât remember the last time she had felt so alone, even with Megan sleeping on the couch above her. She felt empty and miles away from everything and every person she knew. Megan had owled Fabian as soon as James caught wind of the suggestion that they go to France. Normally Doe would have been grateful that her ridiculous escape plan had been thwarted, but she honestly didnât have enough left in her to even care.
So the Gryffindor girls had rushed through the corridors late last night to get to the tower Fabian and Alice shared. The older boy had ushered them in, offering his bed even. But Dorcas refused, just like she refused Aliceâs hug and concerned look. She couldnât handle the kindness they were offering; she didnât deserve it. Taking the blanket that Fabian had offered, she dropped to the floor in front of the couch and curled up, shutting her eyes tightly against everything that had happened in the past few hours. But the one thing she couldnât shut out was the complete heartbreak she felt, knowing she had lost her best mate and her boyfriend all in one go, nevermind the damage sheâd caused to everyone else.
It took hours to realize that she hadnât been sleeping but merely laying there with her eyes fixed on a crack in the stone fireplace. She noticed the dampness on her cheeks right after that, then the way her hands clutched at the blanket as if it was the only thing holding her together. Her eyes slid across the fire, magically charmed to burn through the night as they slept. It was too bright, too angry as it dancing furiously in the dark room, and more than anything, Doe wished she could just shut her eyes and look away. But she was transfixed, the fire bouncing off her dark brown eyes, casting a shadow over her face that seemed to mimic the way she felt inside.
What a mess she had gotten herself into, and all while trying to keep this exact thing from happening. She never wanted anybody to get hurt, and in the course of it, sheâd managed to tear herself apart too. Doe knew that she shouldnât let it get to her, that everything her mates were telling her was good advice. Hell, even Doc was trying to lecture her about not blaming herself. But Matt and Sirius blamed her, and right now, that was really all that mattered. The two people she thought she would always have, whom she could always trust, whom she could always turn to. And they had both walked right out of her life, throwing a few choice words back in her face as they left.

When A Goodbye Kiss Feels Like This || Part II
âDorcas Grace Meadowes, you complete idiot!â Doe dropped her book and rolled over on her bed, burying her head in her pillows in a useless attempt to hide from Megan. âDonât you try to hide from me!â
She felt a blast of cool air waft across her face as Megan ripped the pillow from her head and Doe grimaced as she caught sight of her bright blue eyes.
âMegan leave her alone,â said Gemma calmly from across the room.
âNo. No I will not leave her alone!â She thrust a piece of parchment in Doeâs face, waving it around dramatically. âCare to explain this, Doey?â
âLooks like a bit of owl post?â she asked hesitantly. âDid you nick Filchâs kwikspell notices again?â
âDonât play innocent with me. Iâve just had a letter from John. About Matt. Your boyfriend. Or should I say ex-boyfriend?â
The Girl with the Broken Smile || Closed
All day long, Dorcas had wondered if the universe was out to pull yet another massive joke on her. She was still dreading the party tonight, dreading the feeling she knew would overcome her while in Matt's presence, knowing at the same time that he would've rather been with some other girl. Some nameless faceless bird that she had spent hours trying to label all sorts of horrible names. But she also cared for Matt far more deeply than to wish anything but happiness for him. Wasn't that why she had gone out of her way last night to apologize for avoiding him? Wasn't that why she had let Megan and Mary both talk her into going tonight and having a good time? She knew she couldn't back out at this point, no matter the pain she knew she was preparing to inflict upon herself.Â
Hoping to avoid the glares and lectures from her friends, Doe had dragged herself to the shower shortly before 7 o'clock. She took the precious few moments alone to let herself crumble to pieces, knowing nobody could hear her through the door. She wanted so badly to be with Matt, for him to want her too. She had hoped that tonight that dream might come true. But it wasn't going to happen and it hurt so badly. She cursed her stupidity for letting herself fall for anybody after the last time she had been hurt. And she cried, letting all of these emotions mix with the water running down her face knowing that nobody would ever know just how devastated she was. Pulling herself together, she took a deep breath, wiping the tears and the soapy water from her face. "Alright Meadows. Toughen up. Don't let this ruin your friendship." And that would be her mantra for the night. She had let her feelings get away from her, but she would not be the one to tear apart her friendship with Matt, with- if she was completely honest with herself- one of the most important people in her life.Â
She turned off the shower, hoping that there was still some hot water for Megan so she wouldn't have to deal with the angry eyes in her already fragile emotional state. She quickly dried her hair with her wand, letting it fall in soft waves around her face. "Done," she called out as she left the bathroom, careful to avoid looking at her face in the mirror and even more careful to avoid Megan's eyes as she walked across the dorm to her bed where she'd laid out the dress. She held the towel to her body as she looked down at it, worrying her lower lip between her teeth. This dress... well it was beautiful. Doe would've hoped to wear it for a real date, to impress somebody who might just reciprocate the feelings. She ran the tips of her fingers across the lace on the front and let out a heavy sigh, nodding her head silently when Lily asked if she was okay.Â
With one last pathetic sigh, she lifted the garment from the bed, promising herself that as soon as the dress was on, the dismal moping would end and she would put on a smile for her friends and for Matt. She slipped the dress over her head, running her hands down the front to smooth the skirt. She picked up the red shoes Megan had leant her for the night and dropped them on the bed, not wanting to put them on quite yet. Doe turned at the sound of Megan's voice calling to her in French, "Tu es trĂšs belle, Dorcas!".
"You look very pretty too, Megs. Did I translate that right? You didn't just call me like... a sausage or something, did you?" she asked with a smile, hoping that she was pulling off the carefree, happy Doe facade that she was aiming for. "Would you mind helping with my makeup? You know i'm horrible at it." She took a seat at one of the benches in front of the mirror, letting her best mate's excited voice and doting hands soothe her nerves.Â
Dorcas smiled up at Megan as she stepped away to admire her work. "You haven't made me look like a trollop, have you Megs?" she asked with a laugh as she stood to look in the mirror. "Megan, you... you..." she hesitated, unsure how to put into words the gratitude she felt toward her mate for making her look so well put together, no matter how much she may have protested it at the start. "You look beautiful, Megan," she amended, smiling at her reflection in the mirror. "And thanks. You know, for this," she gestured to the outfit and her face. "And for everything. I promise you, no moping. I'm going to have fun tonight. With my mates." She said with a smile, holding it for probably a moment too long to be truly genuine. "We should go, the boys are probably waiting for us downstairs by now." She pulled her heels on before grabbing Megan's hand as they left the dorm.Â
