Lou experiences his first and last ever meat-cute.
Lou stepped into the coffee shop and immediately spotted Kylie, the sweet nurse he'd met at a party the previous weekend.Â
Kylie stood and they exchanged a warm hug. At the same time, a waiter walked over to take their order.
"Double espresso-" they both began to say at the same time, before laughing at the synchronized order.
"Whoa, where are my manners?" Lou laughed, "Ladies first."
"Double espresso, please," giggled Kylie.
"Make it two, please, my good man," Lou retorted with a dramatic flourish of his hand, and the waiter scampered off to grab the drinks.
"Well this certainly seems promising," Lou couldn't help but think to himself, and from the happy look on Kylie's face, she was thinking something similar.
"So Kylie, you told me that you are a nurse? That must be pretty incredible."
"Yeah, I really love it, and I finally finished my night shifts a few weeks ago, so I can start dating like a real person again..." she tried to catch herself, and then started laughing. "Whoa, not to assume anything..."
"Geez, I'm not sure I can handle someone this forward." Lou replied, and they both cracked up.
Just then, the waiter arrived with their drinks, and both added sweetener, stirred, and took a sip.Â
"Well that hits the spot," Lou said while dramatically smacking his lips, and again they both laughed.
A though came into his head, and Lou spoke up, "So, tell me the craziest thing that ever happened while you were on duty?"
Kylie's eyes lit up, and she answered immediately. "Well, today I realized I've been a nurse for long enough that nothing really bothers me anymore - no matter how gross it is."
Lou's ears perked up, this sounded promising.
She continued, "So this old man who I've been caring for for 2 weeks, he was trying to eat a sandwich and piece of the deli meat fell off and landed on his bare -, er - well, let's just say that his gown had ridden up, and he didn't have anything on underneath it."
Lou began to laugh, and she continued, "So I walk in and realize that his blanket is pushed down and the whole, um, situation is happening down there. Â So without even thinking, I walk over and snatch it off without even putting on gloves!"
"Oh my god, that's so gross!" Lou exclaimed, almost choking on his laughter.Â
"Don't worry, I basically sterilized my hand afterwards."
"Ha ha, I'm sure you did. Â But here's the real question - what kind of meat was it?"
She paused briefly before answering, "Well I'm not positive, but it tasted like it was honey glazed."
"Ohhhhhhh, god." Lou blurted out, feigning like he was going to throw up, and laughing so hard that tears started to form in the corners of his eyes.Â
"You are something else," he said, placing his hand on her freshly sterilized hand.
As the laughter died down, there was a moment of silence, and both were happy to notice it wasn't awkward, rather, quite comfortable.Â
The two continued pleasantly chatting, firing jokes and quips back and forth, and before they knew it, two hours had passed.
"Unfortunately, I've got to get going, I have an early shift tomorrow. But let's do this again soon?" Kiley said hopefully.
"Absolutely...let me help you with your coat," he replied and stepped behind her chair to lift up the blue jacket.
They two exited, and they made plans to meet for dinner later that week. As they parted at the corner, Lou quickly pecked Kylie on the lips.Â
"Wait a second, what is that-" he thought to himself.
"I was hoping you were going to do that," Kyle exclaimed before pulling him in for a deeper kiss, and then with a smile, she walked away.
Lou stood frozen on the corner, trying to figure the taste in his mouth, and suddenly felt a wave of nausea flood his stomach and throat. Despite several cups of coffee, Kylie's mouth still tasted like ham.
