Jamie was relaxed (maybe a little too relaxed considering he took an edible before they came here because he knew he'd need one) as he cut into his steak and let the rich bourbon burn smoothly down his throat. From where he sat, the night was playing out without a hitch. Carter and Jensen were talking, the food was good, and there wasn't the awkward stiffness he'd half-expected when introducing his girlfriend to his sister. Sure, Jensen was laying it on thick with her playful grin and those teasing compliments she was so fond of, but Jamie had warned Carter a while ago before this dinner was even planned. His sister flirted with any woman that breathed (not even her siblings's girlfriends were off limits), but it didn't mean anything. He barely even registered it anymore. To him, this was just Jensen being Jensen, and if anything, he thought it was a good sign she was engaging instead of being distant.
Jensen couldn't help herself. Carter was gorgeous, and watching her brother sit there so casually while Jensen turned the heat up only made it more tempting. She leaned in with every quip, her eyes lingering too long, her voice dipping a little lower than necessary. "You know, Carter, if Jameson doesn't treat you right, you could always trade up. I'm available anytime you need me." She let the joke hang in the air between the three of them, feigning innocence as she sipped her wine. In her mind, it was harmless fun — testing boundaries, stirring the pot like she always did. What she either didn't notice, or didn't care to acknowledge, was the way Carter's smile faltered, her shoulders stiffening each time the attention came her way. "Don't worry, I promise I'd make it worth your while."
