Why your screams aren't working out, even though you have the distortion, by a slightly educated fool
There are three main reasons for it and these are:
1) The lack of clean undertone: All screams are based on vocal folds. There are the vocal folds producing one sound, and there are the other cartilages making the other sounds. Well, you CAN produce screams, without involving other stuff like the false folds or some other part. It's a choice based thing but whoever says that vocal folds aren't used in screaming, is a full on liar who should be shamed publicly. You can get "rid" of the clean tone with hypercompression and still sound good but the vocal folds will still be used in vocals as you can't really do vocals or speak without it.
2) A lack of proficiency with cleans: You might be able to create the distortion but you won't be able to turn it into a scream if you have no comfortable area in your range to do it safely. Working on cleans is extremely important because of this. Well, you CAN eventually learn to do it without learning how to access your mix but your clean base will get too used that way of doing vocals and you'll struggle badly with cleans.... just like I do.
3) Lack of confidence and being afraid of being too loud: If you even manage to solve the issue one and two, you might still fail because you are not confident and you are scared. You are supposed to pour yourself into the scream and that is what makes it sound good. If you get scared of being yourself because of an annoying neighbor or angry loved ones... Well, you are kinda fucked. You can't progress if you are afraid of feeding that scream with those sweet emotions and energy. If you can't support the scream, it will be straining and possibly, damaging. So, scream on confidently and you WILL see the improvements really quickly.
When you learn about the anatomy, invest in your voice and start being confident in yourself, you will be the best screamer around.
