Cartridges were loaded with inserts on this Lucius Pond Front-loading Revolver. Â Most of the inserts were lost over the years, you can see one in the top chamber. Â This design was cludgy, but did evade the Rollin White patent.

Hough H100B front loader
Manufactured by Brooklyn Firearms, the Slocum Revolver was the most mechanically complicated of the front-loading pocket pistols to be developed in the US during the decade that Smith & Wesson controlled the Rollin White patent. This pistol had separate cylinders for each chamber. To load it, each chamber in turn had to be unlatched and slid forward onto the ejector bar beneath the barrel. Then a round could be placed in the empty compartment, to become inserted in the chamber when the cylinder was slid back in place.
