“  did  you  decide  to  make  an  appearance  for  the  sole  intention  of  annoying  me  ?  ”  nat  queried,  sparing  a  brief  glance  in  the  male's  direction.  she  didn't  make  much  time  for  niceties  when  it  came  to  miles,  she  found  it  to  be  a  waste  of  her  time,  and  she  had  made  that  much  abundantly  clear  time  and  time  again. 

shock  was  etched  across  his  features,  and  he  temporarily  found  himself  at  a  loss  for  words.  “  avery,  what  are  you  doing  here  ?  ”  he  asked,  surprised.  “  you  can't  just  show  up  like  this.  ”  well,  she  could,  but  he  hadn't  been  prepared  to  face  her,  so  he  was  entirely  caught  off  guard  by  her  making  an  appearance.  he  supposed  he  should've  expected  it.  he'd  come  out  of  hiding  recently,  and  he  knew  he  was  going  to  have  to  deal  with  people  at  one  point  or  another.  he  just  hadn't  anticipated  it'd  be  this  soon.

“  well,  i'm  here  with  you  because  i'm  trying  to  avoid  doing  something  incredibly  stupid  …  again,  ”  she  said,  taking  a  drag  from  the  cigarette.  she  didn't  smoke  often,  but  sometimes,  she  did  find  herself  with  one  between  her  lips.  it  was  only  ever  in  times  of  great  stress.  nat  had  been  in  a  state  of  tension  for  weeks  now,  and  more  recent  events  were  making  it  threaten  to  spill  over.  she  knew  if  she  did,  she'd  likely  cause  a  path  of  destruction.  “  i  know  you're  not  going  to  say  some  stupid  shit  to  me  that  pushes  me  over  the  edge  i've  been  stuck  on  lately.  i  just  …  i  need  to  distract  myself  from  all  of  this  shit  …  even  if  it's  only  for  a  little  while.  ”

“  how  are  you  feeling  ?  ”  he  felt  like  he'd  asked  her  that  every  day  since  he  brought  her  back  to  his  place  from  the  hospital,  but  he  was  constantly  concerned  that  the  answer  would  change  and  he  wanted  to  be  prepared  for  any  worse  case  scenario  imaginable.  “  i  got  you  something,  by  the  way,  ”  he  said,  setting  her  favorite  bottle  of  wine  down  on  the  table.  “  not  sure  if  you  really  want  to  drink  this  tonight,  but  if  you  do  …  it's  here.  ”

“  why  the  long  face  ?  ”  she  asked,  head  canting  as  she  studied  the  other  carefully.  “  something  on  your  mind  that's  troubling  you  ?  ”  the  blonde  couldn't  stop  herself  from  asking,  she  was  the  type  of  person  to  express  concern  for  others,  even  if  she  didn't  know  them  very  well.
