RCG comrades out in the glorious Manchester sunshine today campaigning against evictions and in defence of social housing!
Manchester is one of the eviction capitals of Britain. In Greater Manchester between 2013 and 2015 almost 4,000 tenants were evicted for rent arrears. The number of benefit sanctions in this period was the highest ever recorded in Britain. 50,000 claim housing benefits in Manchester and are vulnerable to the government’s plans to cut back even further.
By 2015 there were over 14,800 in Manchester on social housing waiting lists. Homelessness rose by 150% in one year. Meanwhile, there were over 109,400 empty homes in the North West.
Manchester Labour council’s ‘Devo Manc’ deal with the Tory government allocated a £300 million housing budget - there is no commitment to put this money into council housing. Private property firms stand to benefit and will build only a small amount of ‘affordable’ homes.
While Labour and Tory governments have sold off council housing, the councils still play a political role on the boards of associations. In Manchester these semi-privatised neighbourhoods are run by boards with Labour councillors side by side with corporate business interests. Inside Housing reports that ‘Chief executives of the biggest 100 housing associations in the sector were paid an average of £182,780 [in 2015], a 5.5% rise [on 2014].’ Three chiefs from City West in Salford, New Charter in Tameside and Great Places got almost £800,000 between them in 2013.
The housing selloff has meant destitution and homelessness for the working class and obscene paychecks for the Labour councils’ rich business friends. Child poverty, council cuts, bedroom tax and benefit ‘reforms’ are creating a catastrophe for the poor. This is a political attack by the crisis-hit capitalist class and it needs a political response. Labour councillors have attacked protesting homeless people, confiscated tents and built fences. The RCG is calling for action to demand an end to evictions and an end to housing for profit. Join us on the streets and build a new campaign!
