Hey I loved your post about the straight people and Straight People. I think it clearly showed the difference in a nice, positive way so thank you for that. You have no idea how much it was to eevee all the support for it also.
Hey friends! While I’m happy that the post has gained a lot of positive attention, I think this is a good time to address something: everyone on our blog has actually grown to hate it. It’s great that you still like it (and we don’t blame you for it cause we used to like it too!) but please see our side.
There are many attachments that address social issues - such as religion, race, gender, mental health, etc. - in an funny, easy, and accessible way. It’s the perfect format for tumblr consumption.
Despite this, however, it has gotten out of hand. What was a post to vent feelings quickly became something else. There have been certain additions (I won’t mention specific ones. I don’t want anyone to get blasted) that are, with caution of sounding rude, either completely ridiculous or derail the conversation.
In addition, the way this is setup allows for individuals to absolve themselves of guilt instead of being forced to self-reflect. When worded in such a way, people are allowed to identify with the non-harmful group instead of having to think about whether they are part of the problem. Using our original example, people who are Straight ™ are able to read this and immediately think of themself being a straight; they don’t read about any harmful behaviors they could be exhibiting because they are not mentioned. Plus, if they are never accused of exhibiting those behaviors, they have no reason to look at their actions and change.
Anyway, it was never meant to absolve straight people of being gross anyway. It was just a passing comment about how some people seem to build their whole identity around heterosexuality and that some people don’t. While this still gives them privilege, it makes them easier to interact with
It has become the text-post version of that overflowing drawer you throw everything into: the original purpose is lost, there’s too many things, nothing makes sense, and you wish you could just clear everything out.
