Today is my Dad’s birthday. This morning I “pressed 0 to accept” and said “Happy Birthday Man” when I heard his voice abruptly break the silence on the line while I wondering if this is the 17th or 18th birthday he’s spent locked up. I know it hasn’t been that many birthday calls. He said thanks and that they’ve been on lockdown, but he’s good. We both have never been big on birthdays. The volume was low and the line kept going on and off, but we made it work. He asked how the music is going, about “the rock thing” I’m doing. We talked about my mom, my brother, God, not fearing life or death, and then he gave me this message that I’m sharing with you: “If you’re doing something you love, it’s not worth doing. Do as much of what you love as you can.” The one minute remaining warning came on, and then mid sentence our conversation ended. Im pretty sure this is the 18th birthday. Feel free to leave a message in the comment or DM for me to email to him, he really loved that last time! And if you have any friends or family who are incarcerated don’t just think about them, reach out to them. There’s no “right time” to do it besides the present, it’s never too late to reconnect. I promise they are thinking about you. It doesn’t have to be whatever it has been. And I chose this picture because my Dad loved to work, professionally. Imagine walking into this dudes office! I swear he sat at his desk in our living room the same way! Being it’s #veteransday I figured it’s only right to share this photo we found from when my Dad was in the #Army in Korea. I don’t know much about his military career but what I do know is he had so many crazy stories, real wild shit. He always said the #UsArmy is what gave him his education. The other things it gave him were why I never enlisted or had any interest in joining the armed forces. What I can say is, be it my father or my friends that did enlist, the military is like money or any other powerful organization. It brings out your best characteristics just as much as your worst character flaws. By design it makes and breaks people, rarely in that order, and is something that changes a person at their core. What that change looks like though is up to you.
