IV. Almost friends
I’m sorry I broke down on you. But after eleven or so hours on the bench, with little sleep and no one’s hand on my back, I just couldn’t handle another uniformed, unaffectionate consolation.
And I think back on how we nearly cried, remembering our mothers’ proud faces broken through reinforced glass. And the shame and sadness we felt And when we felt it again together
And so we were only friends in memories of captivity. For it was easier to patrol the walls of my personal cell, than to face the free uknown
with you.
