  Fraud Ring, Counterfeit 100 Dollar Bills

On 02-23-2016 at 5:31 pm, Officers from the Janesville Police Department responded to a possible fraud complaint at Jimmy John’s on Milton Ave.

Jimmy John’s reported someone tried to pass a counterfeit one hundred dollar bill. A short time later officers received several other complaints of similar activity at businesses in the Milton Ave Corridor. Target, Agrace, Applebee’s, True Laser, Menchies, Hobby Lobby, Wisconsin Vision, Starbucks, Fazolis, Sally Beauty Supply, and Pet land were affected to some degree.

Officer Schoonover and Officer Mieklejohn were developing suspect information and located one of the suspects walking to and from businesses in the area. A short time later Community Service Officer Mueller spotted a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle at Kwik Trip on Milton Avenue. Officer Mueller kept surveillance on the vehicle until a patrol unit could arrive on scene.

Five suspects were detained because of the officer’s efforts. Through the investigation officers located several counterfeit 100 dollar bills. The Janesville Police Department Detective Bureau responded to assist with the investigation. To this point, we know that Rock, Sauk and Dane counties have similar cases involving these same suspects. We are learning that there may be cases in northern Illinois as well. All five suspects are being held at the Rock County Jail for felony uttering 943.38(2). The investigation here is ongoing, and additional charges are likely.

The Janesville Police Department is asking if you recognize these suspects or have 100 dollar bills matching the serial number listed here, contact your local law enforcement agency to report the issue. Many cases have already been reported to jurisdictions in the area.

  McAfee and Guardian Analytics have uncovered a global financial fraud ring. So far, McAfee estimates the criminals have attempted somewhere between €60 million and €2 billion in fraudulent transfers from at least 60 banks.

This fraud empire, dubbed Operation High Roller, is comprised of at least a dozen groups that use active and passive automated transfer systems to steal high-value transactions from high balance accounts. The Operation High Roller attacks have impacted thousands of every class of financial institution: credit union, large global bank and regional bank, using smaller and less detectable automated transactions. 

"We need to remember that criminals are agnostic when it comes to the colour of money. This latest series of coordinated, highly automated attacks moves quickly through multiple continents, scales easily and suggests collaboration across multiple criminal specialists. The size and resources of the bank does not seem to matter either: global banks, regional banks, credit unions have all been impacted and targeted," said Michael Sentonas, Chief Technology Officer - Asia Pacific, McAfee.
