By 1891 one of her older sisters, Selina Adelina, was in asylum, and her younger brother James Jr had died. Frances had trained in the packing department of a soap and toiletries manufacturer, and as a forewoman for that job. After, she worked packing powder in a chemist's, but by 1891 she was without a regular job and was forced to prostitution to support herself, adopting the name of Carroty Nell.
