She never quite grew right. Her crest was floppy and easily torn, no fins grew on her arms and legs, her tail was crooked and bent at the end.
The misshapen flesh and many strange eyes on her head, and the way she always seemed to drool just a bit are what turned off most dragons, and perhaps this was why Taipan found her abandoned as a hatchling. She had been so starved he could see her bones, her frail wings bent and twisted in ways they shouldn't, and covered in scratches.
He was an outcast to his own species, having found a sort of living making poisons and antidotes for dragons, so perhaps that's why he felt an immediate kinship with the little one. Either way, he couldn't just leave her to her fate.
So over the course of time he was patient. He spoon fed her by hand until she was strong enough to eat more than broths, had dragons help reset her wings to maybe one day help her fly. He taught her skills, took her with him everywhere when she wasn't sick.
As she grew he could tell she was a runt. She never reached the full size a mirror dragon could reach, and she never could fly like any other dragon. Most days she rode on Taipan's tail, her limbs not strong enough to support her for long lengths of time.
She was much healthier now than when Taipan found her, but he knew she would never be able to live on her own. Not that he minded, she had a sharper mind than most and was able to keep good company when he spent long nights brewing. Her drool was easy to wipe off and with dark clothes you wouldn't be able to tell when she accidentally got some on them anyway.
He named her Blaire, a name she keeps with pride.
To Blaire, Taipan is her world. He is her legs when she cannot walk, the one who refused to leave her behind when all others thought her to useless to waste resources on.
She will never forget how he looked when she first called him Papa.
