In the Roman Republic, there were two social classes, the plebeians and the patricians. The political system was part of the patricians and often favoured the wealthy. Patricians were wealthy families of who worked in the government. They were often aristocrats and were Patricians by birth, not marriage. Plebeians, on the other hand, were not as wealthy and consisted of families who were farmers and manufactures. Citizens could have been born into Rome, or if they were once a slave but freed, they could become one, however they did not have full rights. It was said by U.S History that the two classes were to be separate, and therefore not allowed to marry. If they were to marry one another, the children of their marriage were by law considered a Plebeian, even though one parent would be a Patrician. Over time, Plebeians elected their own representatives which were called Tribunes, of whom gained the power to veto decisions passed by the senate. In 134 BC, there was a slave rebellion in Sicily, therefore creating the first slave war. This rebellion was accompanied by Plebeians doing "random atrocities" towards patricians and the Senate (G.G, 2008). In 133BC, the Gracchi Brothers' Land Bill introduced to give Plebeians more land to become efficient farmers. According to Plutarch and Appian, Tiberius implemented this land bill to relieve the crisis of the land. Patricians didn't like this change and therefore tried to stop it. Patricians complained for multiple reasons, many being confusion over which parts would be given away. Other reasons include that they had spent time and money on improving their lands, and deprivation of buildings and vineyards. In 287BC, Plebeians were in debt but were refused by the Senate to take any sort of action. The tension between these two classes was built up, creating an undesirable pubic in which to live.
