If a person were hoping to give a gift to a fountain pen enthusiast without knowing anything about fountain pens and what that enthusiast already has or doesn't have, is there anything you would recommend?
Oh sure! Probably the easiest thing to do would be to go on a reputable retailer's site and see what they have in the Accessories section. I've bought from Goulet Pens, Anderson Pens, Vanness, and JetPens, but there's more.
Some folks like to have pen stands or pen sleeves for storage. I've seen some lovely handmade pen sleeves on Etsy.
The other thing that comes to mind is ink samples. Buying a whole bottle is a commitment, so some retailers sell sample vials, which is a great way to try many different colors. There are SO MANY INKS out there! I know Goulet Pens does themed sample packs, and Diamine (which is a brand) just finished their yearly Inkvent advent calendar - there might be a few still floating around.
And of course there's stationery, since not all books/notebooks/notepads are fountain pen friendly. Leuchtturm, Clairefontaine, and Rhodia are three good brands to look up.
I hope that's helpful!
New ink for the new year! JK, I've been buying ink all year-round 🙈
