Miles spent most of his life with a dull glow around his wrist. It wasn’t a huge mark, small enough to be covered by a wristband, dim enough to be nothing more than a faded glow-in-the-dark star. In soulmate terms, that usually meant same continent, different state.
It was fine. It’s fine, really.
In his early years at the company, it ticked up a few tints in brightness, and he’ll admit, he got hopeful. It wasn’t much, but it was closer, it was a warmer orange spilling off his skin.
Miles passed it off as a relief for writing when the glow cut down to almost nothing. There was only the faintest hint of orange for four years, and he started to accept that maybe- maybe his soulmate didn’t want to meet him?
Or they were just busy. People have lives, Miles. Not everyone can live in Texas their whole lives and have a punk from Alabama move in one day out of the blue.
He started to cover the glow, checking it idly every couple of days but not devoting all his time to it anymore. One day it’ll work out, so who cares if it shows all the time? He didn’t.
---
On a lazy Sunday, he crashes early. Monday has a few new people in animation coming, so he should be fresh, ready to go; after all, people expect a happy-go-lucky Miles, and you can’t be energetic when you’re yawning your head off.
His watch covers most of the glow when he scrambles to get moving in the morning, having overslept just enough to make him distracted. He stays busy through to the afternoon, polishing the last bits of his current script and playing video games with Kyle.
It’s when the new hires show up that he finally slows down. Another guy having a busy morning stumbles in last, hair messy and crammed under a star-patterned beanie, shirt rumpled and jeans haphazardly cuffed. A few sharpies fall out of his bag when he jogs over to the lineup, and he drops to pick them up with a sort of clumsy grace. Miles reaches down to help him back up, but he pushes his hand away gently--
And the light sears through the room, day-glo orange, Halloween orange, sunshine orange. His wrist is hot from the glow, and Miles is dazzled by the dancing lights on his soulmate’s fingertips as he shakes and twists his hand. For a moment, he thinks he sees the light in the other’s eyes, glimmering and shifting, but when he blinks all that’s left is a warm, startled hazel.
“Uh- I- Jared, Jared Cooper, is me. I’m Jared, hi?” Jared’s teeth flash in an awkward smile, before they snap together because Miles has wrapped him up in a crushing hug. He thumps the new hire’s back a few times, laughing breathlessly.
“Are you done moving? Cuz, like, if you move away again now, I think I’ll cry, you asshole.”
Jared pauses, unsure of what to do, before wrapping his arms around Miles and laughing with him. “Not goin’ anywhere.”
