The governor of #Texas has declared a #disaster after a deadly ‘brain-eating’ #amoeba was found in tap water – weeks after it killed a young child. Greg Abbot’s declaration that #Naegleria #fowleri, which was identified in three out of 11 tests of the water in the city of #LakeJackson, poses ‘an imminent threat to public #health and safety, including loss of life.’ The investigation began after the #microbe killed a six-year-old boy earlier this month, who probably contracted it from either a garden hose or a splash pad at the city’s civic center. People are usually infected when the single-celled microbe, naturally-occurring in freshwater, enters the #body through the #nose and travels to the #brain, causing amebic meningoencephalitis, a deadly #BrainInfection. Symptoms include vomiting, #hallucinations and seizures, with death usually occurring within one or two weeks of its onset. #Children, #elderly people, and people with weakened #immune systems are particularly #vulnerable to the condition.
