In addition to the actual for-profit app I'm working on, I've also started looking at expanding my iOS skill set in other ways. For example, using the Foursquare API.
I've only just started working on this project (you can see it on my github) but it doesn't look like it will be at all difficult. I'm planning to play around with the connection and responses very soon and to build out the actual functionality shortly after.
While I will certainly keep you posted, you can check out the API on your own in the mean time. It wasn't the most "beginner friendly" thing that I've found for iOS, but it's well documented and ubiquitous enough that any questions I've come up with so far were not hard to answer. If I do find anything that appears particularly difficult or interesting, I'll make sure to post it here.
