My favorite of your fics has always been Lostverse, do you think you'd be up for (this might be too specific sorry) a mutual pining drabble before Jane and John get together?
THANK YOU ANONNY!
I wrote a two-parter â one from Johnâs perspective, the second is Janeâs. You got a double drabble! (The Puppeteer is from a Found & Forgotten missing scene ficlet I wrote for my 500 follower celebration.)
Nearing 700 followers! In celebration, Iâm doing a drabble-a-thon. Send me a prompt and I give you a drabble!

John knew his handwriting was almost unreadable, but Jane â his muse â was always able to decipher the looping letters.
The words spilled out of his brain, through his pencil, and onto the paper like a storm-swollen river.
She had sparked an idea yesterday afternoon. âThe PuppeteerâŠâ
*The Professor gritted against the powerful telepath threatening his mind, but then the onslaught stopped.
Iris stiffened and gasped.
âLeave. Her. Alone,â he warned.
âShe is precious to you,â the Puppeteer hissed.
The Professor gazed down at Jane.
John flushed as he first rubbed out and then scribbled the ghost of her name.

Jane wanted to bang her head on her typewriter.
Normally, she would have simply X-d out the error, â perfectly acceptable for a draft.
Iâd just die if he saw itâŠ
One letter at a time. Clack⊠Clack⊠Clack⊠Clack.
âOh, fudge!â
âMy fella says I swear too much. But is gadzooksâ a naughty?â Betty rambled. âYouâre so good. You never swear.â
âFingers arenât working,â Jane mumbled.
Just four letters. Only four simple taps.
âI-R-I-S,â she mouthed in time with her fingers.
*âŠThe Professor gazed down at JaneâŠ*
She groaned and yanked the paper out a fourth time.

Inspired by @whoinwhoville âs story Found and Forgotten, set in the 1960s. Itâs a really awesome series with great historical research put into it. I wanted to paint Jane (aka Rose, sheâs fob watched) when she gets her hair done âlike a poodleâ to emulate Brigitte Bardot. I really like how it turned out!

Series: Part 4 of FoundVerse, Part 5 of Whoville's Follower Milestone Celebration
Summary:
Everything is just fine. That's an understatement. Missing scenes early on in Found & Forgotten.
Written for @toppbanana who won the âJohn & Janeâ ficlet from my Whoville Follower Milestone celebration. She wanted flirtatious banter or UST.
Note: I went back and read after I posted it, and really didnât like it. It felt like something was missing -- that it was devoid of any emotion. Why is Jane so flustered by John? Why does she blush so fiercely around him? What is goes through her mind when she sees him?
So I re-worked it quite a bit. I like this more than the original. I hope you do too. If you have a chance, listen to the Frank Sinatra song that John whistles and then mindlessly sings. (He doesnât recognize any significance, even though itâs there ever so slightly.)
Jane Smith looked up at the clock â 8:03 am, and John Smith was right on time. She could hear him talking to the much-prettier-than-her (but very nice) receptionist. Male and female laughter mingled. Jane sighed at that, but just in passing.
Instead, she imagined herself the object of his flirtatious attentions. Sheâd laugh prettily and bat her eyelashes. âOh Mr. Smith, youâre just too much,â sheâd reply, and then heâd wink at her. Maybe heâd go on to ask her out to dinner and a film and heâd hold her hand in the dark and â
âGood morning, Miss Smith.â
Jane startled.
âOff with the fairies, Miss Smith?â John asked.
She nodded and smiled shyly.
âSo how are you this lovely, sunny, Monday morning? Did you have a pleasant weekend?â John smiled down at her, and she became very interested in a pencil.
âYes. My weekend was fine, thank you,â Jane answered politely, gaining courage to look back up. But then again, she couldnât help but look. He was too handsome to ignore. His well-tailored suit, the crisp white shirt, that silver tie⊠And then there was the little bit of hair that wouldnât stay in place, hanging down onto his forehead.
âGood. Iâm glad it was fine. Have a good morning, Miss Smith.â
âYou too,â she almost whispered.
John strode down the corridor to his office, and closed the door.
Jane could hear the flirtatious laughter of Priscilla Bootkins from twenty feet away through the thin walls. She balled her fists, and then shoved a piece of typing paper behind the roller, unsuccessfully trying to straighten it against the paper guide.
âWhatâs got you all in a tizzy, Janie?â asked Betty Anderson.
âNothing. Iâm fine. I just canât get this ridiculous piece of paper to go in straight is all.â It was wrinkled and just wouldnât do. The gears whirred as she yanked it out, balled it up, and dropped into the bin under her desk.
oOo
âQuick, Miss Smith!â John planted his hands on her desk, and leaned into her until they were almost nose to nose. âI need the name of a device that takes over someoneâs mind and controls their actions!â
His breath smelled of peppermint candy. His after-shave was a blend of heady, exotic spices. She imagined herself on a veranda overlooking the azure blue, Mediterranean Sea, the sun low in the sky, his arm pulling her into his warm side. She would rest her head on his shoulder and then heâd turn his head and look down at her lips and then heâd dip his head and â
âI can see those gears whirring in your head.â
Jane almost squeaked after he rolled the Râs. Why did he have to be Scottish, too? she thought.
âDo you have something brilliant for me?â He raised his eyebrows.
Roused out of her daydream, her head snapped back to him. âThe idea of someone controlling your mind is a bit terrifying, Mr. Smith.â She bit her lip.
âOf course. It wouldnât be an adventure without a bit of a scare now, would it?â He leaned even more closely.
Jane looked up at the ceiling. âMind⊠Mind⊠Mindthief. Mindrobber. Thought-Thief.â She paused and shook her head. âNo. The name shouldnât sound like a machine. Itâs more frightening that that.â She opened her eyes and looked up at him. âThe victimâs mind is controlled by a Puppeteer.â
âA Puppeteer,â he whispered, furrowing his brows, his dark eyes unwavering from hers. âFine job, Miss Smith. Fine, fine job.â
She nodded quickly, and then turned her attention back to her typewriter, the memory of peppermint candy and bay rum lingering.
oOo
âGood afternoon, Miss Smith. How is your day coming along?â John asked Jane.
Jane quickly swallowed a bite of the snack sheâd been eating and cleared her throat of the crumbs. âItâs fine.â She held the half-eaten piece of shortbread so tightly that it was about to crumble.
âDo you like shortbread, Miss Smith?â
âYes. Itâs fine, Mr. Smith.â She smiled shyly.
âWhat a coincidence! I like shortbread, too! Weâre full of coincidences, arenât we? First John David Smith and Jane Donna Smith. And now we both like shortbread!â He nabbed a piece, and pushed the whole thing into his mouth. âBut then again,â he said, mouth full, âI think itâs a rule that I like shortbread. Iâm Scottish. I have to like it, donât I?â He took a second piece, and a third. âOh, this is very good. Very good. First chance Iâve had to try it. I brought it in this morning. Thereâs a fantastic little bakery near my flat. They make the most delicious banana nut loaf, tooâŠâ
Jane was knocked out of her rose-coloured reverie.
âIâll have to bring banana nut loaf in next time. Make sure you take a piece or two of the shortbread before itâs all gone, Miss Smith.â He winked. He turned on his heel as he shoved another piece into his mouth.
Janeâs cheeks turned a delightful shade of pink as she watched him leave the room. She checked for onlookers before she daintily picked up a second wedge to savour later.
Youâve gotten yourself into a fine mess, Jane Smith. You are not fine. Not fine at all.
oOo
Janeâs attention was captured as John ambled down the hallway at a slower pace than was usual for him. His suitcoat was draped over his shoulder held casually with his pointer finger. His kissable lips were pursed as he whistled a Sinatra tune. If he werenât whistling, he would have been smiling. She could see happiness in the crinkles around his eyes. A bit of late afternoon stubble graced his jawline, but his hair was still perfectly in place â except, of course, for that one delicious piece of his fringe that framed his brown eyes.
Janeâs eyes glazed over as she paused her typing for a moment. She imagined those lips not whistling, but kissing. They would be so soft as he gently, ever so gently, pressed his against hers. It would be under the moonlight, and heâd be a complete gentleman. Holding her close, but not too close. And his arms would be warm and strong.
She let the thought drift away as he ambled on by her desk.
The whistling stopped.
Janeâs stomach lurched as out of the corner of her eye she could see the handsome man returning. She fought to focus her attention on the keyboard, but her fingers slipped, and she misspelled miss as kiss. Her desk lurched as her foot slipped, kicking the desk leg.
âEverything all right, Miss Smith?â Mr. Smith asked kindly.
âFine. Everythingâs fine,â she stuttered. The top button of his shirt was undone, and his tie, loose.
âItâs two minutes until five oâclock on a Friday. I think it would be all right if you left two minutes early, donât you?â
She shook her head and bit her lip. âI couldnât do that, Mr. Smith. Iââ
âI give you permission. That is my manuscript youâre working on after all. I recognize my own scrawl on those notes.â He looked at his watch, and tapped it. âAnd now itâs one minute until five. Time to go home for the weekend.â
âWell, I suppose I could tidy up now.â Jane picked up the stack of unused paper and tapped it so it was perfectly square. She placed her pencil in front of her typewriter, and then straightened her inbox.
âSo what were you working on so diligently before I interrupted you?â Mr. Smith reached in front of Jane, flipped the paper release, and pulled the paper out.
Jane squeaked as she watched Mr. Smith scan the page. His eyes stopped on the last line. âHmm. I donât remember this sentence going this way.â He cleared his throat. âIris looked up at the Professor with longing. âIâll kiss you, Professor. Iâll never stop.ââ A slow smile appeared.
âIâm sorry for the error, Mr. Smith. I was about to correct it when you happened by. My fingers slipped, andââ
âItâs fine, Miss Smith.â He leaned closer. âBut there isnât kissing just yet.â
âOh⊠IâŠâ
âYouâre fine!â He lowered his voice, and nearly whispering said, âYouâll get to type that word soon enough. Whereâs the fun in rushing things?â He winked at her.
Jane pushed her glasses up her nose and blinked once.
âMiss Smith, have I ever told you that you do fine work? Of all of the typists, you are the finest.â He grinned. âWell would you look at that. Itâs officially five oâclock. Off you go! Have a good weekend, Miss Smith.â
John resumed his musical exit, but this time he sang. âA fine romance, with no kisses. A fine romance, my friend this isâŠâ
Janeâs belly flipped and she dropped her face into her hands. Youâre going to be fine, Jane Smith. Just fine.
oOo
Bess slipped on a stylish black coat and tugged on a pair of red kid driving gloves. âWhat are you going to do on this dreary Saturday, darling?â
âNothing special.â Jane looked out the window and took a sip of tea. Rain pelted the pane.
âIâm afraid I wonât be back until later this evening, darling. Luncheon with Mother always turns into dinner. I hope you wonât be terribly lonely.â
âIâm never lonely when I have a something to read. Iâll be fine.â
As soon as the door closed behind Bess, Jane rushed into her bedroom and pulled out her favourite book. She ran her hand over the cover, tracing the face of the Professor. She closed her eyes as she clutched it to her chest and sighed in anticipation. âA whole day with the Professor and Iris,â she said to herself. âA whole day with John Smith.â
She didnât daydream this time â reading Johnâs book would draw her inside of a daydream.
Oh yes, just for today, she was going to be just fine.
oOo
John paced the length of his flat. Heâd been wearing a hole in the hardwood for at least fifteen minutes now. He groaned. This arrangement with Priscilla wasnât working. At all. He was not fine. Heâd lost his ability to write. He was constantly in need of help. Thank heaven for Jane Smith â his very own Muse. Without Jane, he wouldnât have been able to get anything on paper.
He thought back to yesterday afternoon. He laughed at Janeâs typo and the terrified look that had been on the shy girlâs face. âKiss instead of miss. Thatâs really quite funny.â
Iris looked up at the Professor with longing. âIâll kiss you, Professor, and Iâll never stop.â
âNo kissing. Not yet.â He ran a hand through his hair and dropped onto the black leather sofa. But he couldnât seem to shake that sentence from his thoughts. âBut it does feel right â the Professor kissing Iris. Iâll make it happen. Soon.â
As clear as a memory, he let the future scene play out in his head. His beloved Iris would be locked in a passionate embrace with the Professor. Heâd cradle her head and dip her â but only just slightly. Sheâd have one hand in his hair, and the other low on his back. And the world would fade away as they whispered the truth of their hearts into each others lips.
âItâs going to be fine, Smith. Itâs going be fine.â If he repeated it enough, maybe heâd actually believe it.

Hereâs a snippet from Chapter 17, Jane & The Gift
She made her decision. She would go downstairs alone, but Daniel didn't say not to tell anyone, now did he? She would tell Bess on her way down. The lobby was a public place after all. Nothing would happen in the lobby. Daniel couldn't be that foolish. And it was a busy Thursday at nearly ten o'clock in the morning. There would be plenty of people milling about. She was feeling so much braver than she had yesterday. She looked down at her engagement ring. The sight of the sapphire on her finger made her feel bolder than she ever had in her life. She felt self-confident. And these new feelings were all thanks to John.
She really believed that there was nothing Daniel could do or say that could hurt her. So what if he spread some false rumours? John was right. Anyone who cared about her wouldn't believe them anyway.
"What was that about?" John asked.
"Uh, John, there's something I need to take care of. Would you mind if I popped out for a bit? If I take my break early?" Jane hated lying to John. She fiddled with her engagement ring and then quickly added, "Wedding things." She smiled unconvincingly after she said it.
"Oh! Well then by all means, go! Off with ye'!" he said with a gentle wave of the hand and a smile. "I think I'll take some notes or do some outlining."
Jane started to walk out.
"Wait a minute, you can't leave without giving me a proper goodbye," John said with a cheeky grin. He was at her side in two long strides, and in his arms in less time than it took to blink. He kissed her lovingly. "Hurry back," he whispered into her ear.

Excerpt from chapter 11:
Jane let herself into her darkened flat. Bess's coat and handbag were not hanging on the coat rack by the front door, so Bess was still at work. As she had promised John, Jane went to her bedroom window to let him know she was safely inside. She watched as his car pulled away, already missing him desperately.
Floating on a cloud of happiness, she drew the drapes, dreamily humming, Que Sera, Sera . She changed into her favourite nightgown. White cotton lawn was trimmed with lace around the cuffs and collar, and a tiny pink bow graced the neck. It was old-fashioned and soft and comforting, and even though it covered her from neck to toe, she still felt pretty when she wore it. She prepared tea, and then sat on the sofa to calm herself.
Jane brought the fine china teacup to her lips. The warmth of the fragrant tea flooded her mind with memories of John's warm lips caressing hers. Her stomach flipped and she flushed recalling the foreign and somewhat startling feeling of his tongue touching hers! She hid a little smile behind her hand.
It had been thrilling when he'd traced the seam of her lips with the tip of his tongue. That first kiss... It had been bliss. And just like in a romantic, Doris Day movie, her leg had popped. Jane released a happy sigh, curled her legs underneath herself, and leaned against the sofa. And then she started to think about the kiss by the statue. Now that kiss... Sheâd never felt anything like that! She'd read about French kissing in his books! Jane flushed again letting it all sink in. The man who had kissed her tonight, the one who'd she'd been pining after, he actually wrote about this sort of thing! And now she'd actually shared that kind of a kiss! With him!
The remembered how his tongue caressed hers. Sheâd felt so naughty at first, but still, it had given her a secret thrill. She bit her lip and pondered for a minute. But is it really? Is it really wrong? What would mum think about me if she knew? Itâs me who let him kiss me like that! And on the first date! Heâs the one who asked if he should stop.
