Holy wind Batman
Saturday’s ride was interesting to say the least. Saturday’s ride started out at the High Trestle trailhead in Ankeny Iowa.
The original ride idea was to go south to Cumming, meet up with friends, have food and beverages and ride back home. That idea got scrapped when I saw people were riding east and south to Bondurant, Pleasant Hill Copper creek and back to Ankeny. I opted for option “B.”
The ride was a group ride that went about 14 mph average. Which for having a 20-30 head to head crosswind for most of the ride wasn’t bad. There were 12 of us in the pack together which made everything at least bearable.
We rode to Founders Irish pub in Bondurant for lunch. I had a chicken bacon ranch wrap with fries, hold the garden. Others had burgers and stuff. I didn’t pay much attention after I got my food. I destroyed it. We then rode east to Altoona. That was the worst part of the ride as we were most vulnerable to the winds with being on the roads.
When we got to Altoona we got on the bike trail again and road it to Copper Creek. We stopped at Copper Creek then some of us split off to head back to Ankeny. I rode back to Ankeny with the group for a little while, once I knew where I was going, I stepped on the pedals and turned up the wick.
My supply load for this ride was light with very little as I had just two water bottles. My clothing was a question as I knew the weather would be all over the place that day. Going in to the wind I had my cold weather mask on. And coming home with the wind, it took it off. My clothing was a under armor base layer long sleeve, and leg warmers. I wish I would have had a three quarter leg warmer, I would’ve been set!
The whole ride took 3 hours and change. It was fun, but it was also a challenge. I love that route as you have all the best parts of Iowa in it, wind, hills open prairies and shaded trails. All together a perfect day spent with some darn near awesome friends.
