❝    𝐝𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐨  ,    ❞    sing  -  song  and  merry  ,  the  lilt  in  her  voice  is  birdsong  in  a  desolate  wasteland  .    out  of  place  ,  jarring  in  the  way  that  glitter  at  a  crime  scene  would  be  .    jinx  moves  with  accidental  grace  as  she  maneuvers  past  ekko’s  place  on  the  massive  blade  she’d  made  home  ,  unceremoniously  dropping  a  bag  to  her  feet  as  she  scanned  her  belongings  .    tools  ,  crayons  ,  blueprints  &  crude  ,  childish  drawings  a  haphazard  mess  on  the  workspace’s  surface  .    to  anyone  else  ,  it  would  be  a  nightmare  .    it  all  made  sense  to  her  ,  one  braid  falling  over  a  shoulder  as  she  skillfully  navigated  the  chaos  to  find  just  what  she  needed  .

❝    silco  said  ,    ❞    she  grabs  an  unfinished  chomper  (  all  scribbled  neons  and  jagged  ,  half  rusted  metal  )  as  she  turns  on  her  heel  .    free  hand  ,  her  left  ,  finds  purchase  against  her  face,  obscuring  her  left  eye  as  her  tone  shifts  to  an  overplayed  ,  deep  raspy  voice  ,    ❝    jinx  ,  this  job  is  very  important  ,  so  take  your  time  and  do  it  properly  .    whatever  !    ❞

with  a  puff  of  air  that  sends  blue  strands  flying  ,  one  finger  hooks  itself  around  the  explosive’s  pin  &  yanks  it  out  .    in  one  swift  movement  ,  the  device  is  sailing  through  the  air  towards  ekko  ,  sparking  &  clanking  loudly  .    as  if  it  were  nothing  ,  jinx  turns  back  around  to  shuffle  through  some  papers  ,  a  search  for  a  blank  sheet  ,    ❝    it’s  like  ,  if  you  want  things  done  the  boring  way  ,  sivika  is  right  there  .    she  just  about  about  hits  the  nail  on  the  head  ,  right  ?    it’s  no  sweat  anyway  ,  sounds  like  an  easy  run  .    ❞

by  the  time  she  finds  what  she’s  looking  for  ,  the  chomper  had  run  out  of  steam  and  burnt  itself  out  with  an  anticlimactic  fizzle  .    momentarily  ,  gaze  flickers  over  ,  giggle  bubbling  out  from  between  her  lips  like  a  pot  that’d  boiled  over  .    then  ,  dropping  what  she’s  doing  ,  jinx  saunters  over  to  her  friend  .    personal  space  disregarded  ,  she  drapes  an  arm  over  either  shoulder  ,  leans  in  ‘til  faces  are  mere  inches  apart  ,    ❝    don’t  look  so  serious  ,  grumpy  .    how  ‘bout  this  ,  ‘kay  ?    when  i  get  back  ,  i’ll  make  it  up  to  you  .    ❞

a  beat  -  she’s  thinking  .    then  ,    ❝    we  can  go  somewhere  to  eat  together  .    somewhere  nice  .  .  .    ish  .    ish  .    i  promise  ,  i  pinky  swear  even  !    deal  ?    ❞

“    𝐲𝐨𝐮  𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲  𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰  𝐦𝐲  𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐫.    ”    the  words  aren’t  meant  to  be  cruel;    not  at  all,    in  fact,    &.    tohma  hopes  the  thumb  brushing  across  the  back  of  childe’s  hand  is  proof  enough.    it  isn’t  that  he  is  tired  of  saying  it;    no,    he  thinks  he  could  spend  the  rest  of  his  life  repeating  his  answer  over    &.    over.    whatever  it  takes;    whatever  childe  needs. 

if    it  had  been  more  arrogant──    if  it  had,    in  all  of  its  meaning,    had  wanted  to  crush  the  heart  it  holds  so  dear──    perhaps  it  would  ask  him  to  stop.    to  hang  up  its  blades,    to  snap  the  leash  held  so  tightly  by  its  archon.    but  it  would  be  like  clipping  a  bird’s  wings,    &.    that  isn’t  what  tohma  wants  at  all.    he  looks  at  childe  for  a  heartbeat,    two,    contemplation  heavy  in  his  eyes.

𝐢𝐭’𝐬  𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭  𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠  𝐨𝐧𝐞  𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫,    𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦  𝐭𝐡𝐞  𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠,    𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬;  the  retainer  brings  both  hands  to  cup  childe’s  face,    smile  soft    &.    warm.    sunlight  sets  its  hair  aflame,    &.    he’s  more  sure  than  ever.    “    whatever  you  give  me,    ”    he  murmurs,    pressing  his  forehead  to  the  other’s.    “    whatever  you’ll  have  me  do.    𝒊  𝒂𝒅𝒐𝒓𝒆  𝒚𝒐𝒖,    𝒅𝒐𝒏’𝒕  𝒚𝒐𝒖  𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘?    ”

the  depth  of  his  love  frightens  him,    but  it  seems  the  harbinger  has  a  talent  for  making  him  take  impossible  jumps.    ‘  don’t  you  trust  me,    sunshine?  ’    it  had  asked  once,    teasing,    prying.    he  shouldn’t  have;    at  least,    not  that  first  time.    but  over    &.    over,    tohma  has  put  his  faith  in  him,    &.    he  cannot  regret  it.    (    ──    there  are  few  things  in  life  he  regrets.    once,    it  had  been  boarding  the  ship  to  inazuma.    now,    he  isn’t  so  sure.    if  he  had  been  in  mondstadt,    if  he  had  stayed,    𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝  𝐡𝐞  𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥  𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞  𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝  𝐮𝐩  𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞?    )    “    you  frighten  me,    sometimes,    ”    he  admits.    “    but  whatever  you  trust  me  with,    i  won’t  run away,    no  matter  how  grotesque.    ”

don’t  you  trust  me,    dew  drop?    if  tohma  had  been  more  selfish,    if  it  had  wanted  to  clip  those  wings──    perhaps  he’d  ask.    but  as  it  smiles  at  childe  with  one  that  crinkles  its  eyes,    it  doesn’t  ask  for  any  of  it.    he’s  good  at  giving,    enough  for  the  both  of  them.

“    for  as  long  as  you’ll  let  me,    i’ll  stay  right  here.    ”
