#1849: looking at when megaherbivores were in and around Florida based on the Sporormiella evidence, they co-existed with humans for a good two thousand years before promptly disappearing. however, they did briefly come back - bison extended down into the peninsula for ~300 years 10.1kyBP.
we also know of the bison's brief visit to Florida from the butchery found in some sites: knives and bits of carved rock that have tiny blood residue, things like that. also a bison skull; that's pretty good evidence for bison. there's one bison skull found right in the north of modern-day Florida with a small fragment of chert (rock) that they say points towards a kill. this species of bison (Bison antiquus) went extinct around that time anyway.
