We are pleased to introduce our newest team member Arran Ferguson, Senior Archaeologist. After completing an Honours degree in archaeology at Reading University in 1993, Arran Ferguson embarked on a long and varied career in archaeology and culture resource management. Arran cut his teeth in Ireland during the economic and infrastructural building boom of the 1990s, working on a variety of urban and rural sites dating from the Mesolithic to the late medieval period and most inbetween. This period of extensive open plan excavation was followed by a many years excavating and mitigating sites in the UK from Hadrian's Wall to London before returning to Canada in 2007. Since his return Arran has been involved on the ground and in the capacity as project manager for a range of medium to large scale infrastructural developments throughout the province of BC, with a focus on Northeast boreal forest archaeology. I spent the day grinding down some asphalt to get rid of some puddles that just don’t disappear. In the process I was reminded of the folks who work the ER in our local hospital and the hours they put in because of being “short-staffed”. Is it the lack of money, the distance to the North, the bu·reauc·ra·cy? Whatever it is that’s causing the lack of medical staff, I am so thankful for the folks that pour out their lives for those of us who need them. Having been a medic in Alaska, I’ve been there and poured out for the thankful and the ungrateful. I loved helping people, having the opportunity to maybe delay a person’s passing so that they could love one more day! Next time you cross paths with a doctor, a nurse, a med student, the hospital house cleaning staff, tell them how much you appreciate what they do and who they are.
