Restaurant of the Week: Forries
So after an intense few days of having my family over at my house for Christmas, preparing an endless stream of vegan dishes, my sister, thought it would be a great idea we go out for dinner, giving me and my kitchen a break.
The place she suggested though, filled me with dread. While I used to be a regular in my pre vegan days, and have, infact, since joined friends at Forresters based in Newlands a few times for drinks since; the menu, for a vegan, is a daunting prospect.
Practically every dish is meat based. The few that aren't, usually involve copious amounts of cheese. It was a genuine surprise to find that I did in fact have a few options. Options that did not compromise the quality of the food served. If you are vegan, fear forries no more, safe in the knowledge that you can even order something other than a salad.
For starters I ordered their vegetable spring rolls (supposedly served with soya sauce, although mine came with sweet chilli sauce. Not that I minded in the least). For mains, and this is where you should prep for sensory overload, I ordered a wrap. This unexpected taste sensation is served in the largest wood fired wrap I have ever laid eyes on and overflowing with courgettes, aubergine, red onion, red pepper, broccoli, cauliflower all grilled to perfection, topped with a Balsamic reduction and scattered with Basil. Usually served with Mozzarella, you need simply tell your waitress to hold the cheese.
I swear that even if you are a guy with the appetite of a lion, you will not finish this wrap. If you do I'd like to know about how you did it.
Thanks Forries for making an effort to accommodate your patrons dietary requirements. Quality service and quality food. Its the experience I've been having with you guys for years. Visit Forries at 54 Newlands Avenue, Newlands, Cape Town or follow them on Facebook, here. (or ZAVegan here).
Relations Project - The Vertical Frame
Eureka Tower - Vertical image to capture the height and magnitude of the building. The image is framed at the top by a tree's leaves and the bottom by trees leaves, this shows a relationship between a city and nature.
See-through Tree - This is a photo of my sister and dad framed by a split section in a tree trunk. The image shows relations of family, and also relation between people and nature.
Wave-Jump - The vertical framing of this image by the out of focus rock and the background wave tells a story within this image. The viewer can see that the area being surfed may be dangerous due to the rock sticking up in the foreground, but also a sense of wander as to why the surfer is riding this wave as opposed to the bigger and well-formed wave in the background. This image shows the relationship between the wave and the rider.
