Today we mourn the senseless murder of 5 park rangers and a driver in Virunga National Park. Over the past 20 years, over 150 rangers have been murdered while protecting the gorillas, and like our colleague at @NatGeo photographer @BrentStirton has so dramatically documented in the past, many gorillas have been murdered as well. Ravaged by the unrest sweeping Congo's troubled North Kivu province, dozens of armed groups are preying on the local population and battling for control of rich reserves of timber, gold and other resources. It is time for the world to stand up and act to protect both rangers and wildlife but today, I ask that we take a moment to think about the brave rangers who lost their lives, their families, and their wards, the mountain gorillas of the Congo.
