Feeling deflated. I finally found a family doctor and when I asked about an ADHD assessment, she said that people "grow out of it" by the time they're 17. She said she had no idea if a psychiatrist would even do anything, and that I should probably find a psychologist on my own, but I've been contacting some and it would be $2000 I don't have. She said we could still talk about it when I get a physical next week. Argh! Any advice on how to prepare?
Write down all the things that are causing you problems - not the diagnostic criteria specifically, but all of the difficulties you’re having that make you go “hey, that might be ADHD.” Be sure to include information like how long it’s been bothering you, because it does need to be evident before the age of 12.
You might also do a questionnaire out of a book about ADHD in adults; Ed Hallowell has them in his books, as does Russell Barkley. You can find the books at the library and photocopy the questionnaire, and then bring the book and the completed questionnaire with you to the appointment.
