I just found out, an angel told me, that there is dead inside: there is dead inside me. Do you really wanna walk outside the village with me? Do you really wanna walk, knowing what you know? That there is dead inside, there is dead inside me. My sharpened teeth into your white skin.
Song Diary Day 171: "It All Starts Now" by Foreign Slippers
There was an exhibition tonight for a summer arts camp that I used to staff at many years ago. The kids read some of their poems and short stories, and the visual arts classes had their artwork on display. I realized these past few weeks that I really miss working at summer camps. I didn't get exiled or fired or anything; I just have a job that doesn't give me summers off.
These not-quite-closing ceremonies are always bittersweet for me, because I've been on both the camper side and the staffing side at various points. "It All Starts Now" was the song that played during the camp hijinks slideshow. I wasn't terribly impressed by whoever took the photographs, because it looked less like a highlight reel and more like a mishmash of whatever photos and video clips they had on hand last midnight. The campers seemed to like it, though. They made memories that will last for years or even decades in the moment those photos were taken.
I'm on the outside looking in when it comes to those photos, but I know how powerful those memories can be. Some of my favorite "memory photos" from when I was that age are poorly composed and probably of no significance to anyone but me. Shots of a bird, a fake billboard for Alaska, a shrimping boat, a ceramic pig... Those are my memories of my summers. And the outsiders looking in at a slideshow of those pictures will probably say "those pictures kind of suck, man."
But I was there. And those (objectively not great) pictures? They help me recreate those memories over and over again. I know those feels, kids. I know them well.
P.S. Today's song was almost "Legends" by The Bulgarian Voices. While I only modestly like "It All Starts Now," it had more relevance to today's events than did "Legends." My wife actually described "Legends" like this: "Is that supposed to be fun music? It sounds like something you would hear in the soundtrack of a video about people picking through the rubble of a bombed church in slow motion."
