Forecastle- Fo'c's'le
Formerly a raised deck at the front of the ship (the first ones can be traced back to the 13th century), from where fire was directed the enemy - it served the function of a castle tower, hence the name.
Spanish galleon firing its cannons at other ships (detail), by Cornelis Verbeeck c. 1618/1620 - Here you can clearly see the still elevated forecastle, but not quite as high as earlier ships had it.
Over the years (from the late 17th century at the latest it has almost disappeared) its hight was lowered to make ships more manoeuvrable, and to enable the captain on the poop deck to see what was happening. Thus the forecastle came to meant the front decking, but also the area where the Sailors live.
Down below her the two torches made visible two small patches of deck and gleamed on swords and helmets, and forward there was another island of light on the forecastle.

On the near side was a quay of white marble and, moored to this, the ship: a tall ship with high forecastle and high poop, gilded and crimson, with a great flag at the mast-head, and many banners waving from the decks, and a row of shields, bright as silver, along the bulwarks.
