Men wait for a haircut at a barbershop in the remaining section of Badia East, an informal settlement in Lagos, Nigeria in February 2014. One year earlier, hundreds of households woke to construction equipment demolishing their community on order from the Lagos State Government with little or notice. Most had minutes to reach safety, losing their homes and possessions. Thousands are still displaced one year later. Badia East is one of the communities that should have benefited from a World Bank funded $200 million “slum upgrade” project but the Lagos State Government failed to abide by policies that would have notified and resettled residents properly.
