You can’t win anything with kids!
Tonight against Everton in the Premier League, Manchester United are set to extend a historic streak of having an academy graduate in the first-team matchday squad — a streak of 4000 games, dating back to 1937. From Tom Manley and Jackie Walsall, to the Busby Babes, to the Class of ‘92, and now the new kids on the block under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, United have carried on a proud tradition of fielding homegrown talent.
The top five of United’s all-time appearances list are all academy graduates, as are several of the club’s record goalscorers. Fifteen managers over 82 years have given youth a chance. It is, as current manager Solskjaer says, “in our DNA”.
United’s leading goalscorer and talisman for the season is Marcus Rashford (13 goals), who has been with United since age seven. 18-year-old Mason Greenwood follows with six (6) goals and has been with United since age six.
