I'm going to use 2 non canon cats to explain how fool clans mask and ceremony systems work.

This is Granola kit and her sister monkey kit as kits, they don't have masks and live their lives as any other clan kit.

Granola, paw decides to take the path of a Warrior she's picked a dog mask and is assigned a mentor but she's not considered an apprentice, quite yet for the rest of the day, granola and her mentor will spend time figuring out her performance when night comes she performs with her mentor for star clan only then is she considered an apprentice the next day is when she officially starts her Apprentice duties

Monkey paw, however, decides to take the path of a medicine cat.

Medicine cats are only allowed to pick bird theme masks.

So she picks a duck she's now known as monkey paw and is given her mentor for the rest of the day.

She and her mentor spend the rest of the day figuring out monkeypo's performance for star clan.

However, unlike Warrior apprentices, monkey paw and her mentor go to sleep and perform within starclan itself, the next morning, monkey Paws officially, a medicine cat Apprentice and officially starts their duties.

Time passes and granola pot is ready to be a Warrior she passes her assessment, but isn't given her name yet She spends her final day as an apprentice, figuring out her performance night comes and she performs But unlike before, she performs, without her mentor and she has to make sure her performance is good. This time, because if it's not good enough, she can actually be held back from becoming a Warrior but luckily, she passes and has given her name granola Fur.

She approaches the leader and hands over her apprentice mask, which is then put into storage for a future apprentice to use as the leader and granola fur old mentor. Will spend the rest of the night creating a new mask for granola fur to wear for the rest of her life.

She's given it the next morning and then she's considered a full warrior and she continues her life as a normal Warrior.

But it's time for monkeypaw to become a full medicine cat. She spends the day preparing her performance that night without her mentor. She goes to the place where all the cats speak to Starclan. She wakes up and performs her routine. If starclan accepts her, she'll be given her name.

If not she'll be held back but she passes and is now named monkey fruit a star Clinton cat will inform her mentor and the leader of her passing when she returns monkey fruit and her old mentor will spend the rest of the night making her new mask to present her new mask and her new name, the next day when the rest of the clan is awake.

Outsiders, who joined the clan fully grown, must pass an assessment by the leader if they pass, they just get their Warrior mask immediately if they don't, they're not given a mask at all and have to earn it.

But let's say a lot of time has passed and somehow, granola Fur manages to make it to deputy and now it's time for her to become a leader she must Go to the leader spot this is an area separated from the medicine cat meeting spot for star clan and she must perform for the 9 cats giving her 9 lives and after\n The performance, she's given her 9 lives and becomes granola star once she arrives back at\n The clan, she adds a star motif somewhere on her mask

But it's been even longer granola star has gone older But so has her sister monkey fruit and monkey decides it's time to retire and so she gets the honor of placing her mask on the elders tree where it will stay even after her death, a great honor.

Cats who die before they become elders have their masks buried with them. If an apprentice dies before they can earn their Warrior name and their mask, the leader will make them a new mask anyway, because in reality, it's not really a reward for getting their Warrior name. It's a reflection of who they are, and who the leader sees them as
