Artist - Padmashri Baua Devi ji. Born in the village of Jitwarpur in Bihar, Baua Devi emerged as one of the pioneers of Madhubani painting, helping to bring this ancient folk art to people globally. Her talent was first noticed at the age of 12 by Mumbai-based artist Bhaskar Kulkarni, who encouraged her to accompany him to the National Crafts Museum in New Delhi in 1966. In her work, Baua Devi usually reinterprets religious mythology and folk tales from the female perspective. She has also addressed contemporary issues, such as the events of 9/11. The artist is traditional in her methods, often using natural handmade colours in her paintings.
