MANCHESTER BOTH - p. foden
inwhich! your husband, phil foden, invited you to watch his game against their biggest rival, man united. you came in support of him even though you’re a man united girl at heart.

you were born in salford, manchester, so you were naturally born united fan. you grew up loving and playing the sport as well, it never bothered you that you had no choice to pick which team to support because you had always though united was the better pick either way.
you never cared much for the rivalry against city. mainly because all your friends were united fans so you never had to deal with stupid arguments, but also because you knew your team was better in every aspect.
that was until you met your current husband phil. you two had met a couple days before his debut for city. you both were only 16 and 17 at the time and you yourself had no idea he even played football.
you invited him over one night after going to the bar together, not wanting him to drive back home very tipsy, considering he lived pretty far.
it was true you never cared about the rivalry, although your childhood bedroom was covered in man united merch and photos of when you went to their tournaments, signed jersey’s, a signed ball, and many flags and posters.
you had met him a couple weeks prior to inviting him back home and somehow never got on the topic of football. you assumed since you met him in your hometown, that he was a united fan.
you quietly unlocked your parents front door, told him to make sure to keep the noise down and tiptoed all the way to your room. you went in first, not turning on the light until you had shut the door and locked it.
you see his eyes widen, you hoped it wasn’t because you had dirty laundry on the floor or dirty water cups on your vanity, so you assumed it was because of the sudden light and drunkness of him.
he continued looking around your room and his demeanor changed, you instantly noticed.
“is something wrong?” you paused, “sorry it’s a bit messy, i know, my clean up day is always sunday.”
he nodded his head no, “i didn’t even notice, i just,” he grabbed a framed photograph you had lying on your vanity, it was a picture of you and the newest young star at the time, marcus rashford.
you were holding up his jersey which he signed, and had a big smile on your face as he side-hugged you.
“big fan, huh?” he said, you thought it was a joke but he didn’t laugh.
you shrugged slightly, “not of him specifically.”
he gives you a “really?” look as he nods his way towards his signed jersey on the wall and a poster of him next to it.
“okay, well, he’s the newest best player!” you pointed to the dozens of other things you had up on your walls, “and it’s not only him, i’m not obsessed or anything.”
he laughed softly, putting the framed photograph back down, “i see.”
“what?” you tilted your head, “not big on sports?”
he laughed once more, a little harder, “no, i am.”
you furrowed your eyebrows, inspecting him, “don’t tell me you’re a liverpool fan?” you said trying not to scoff.
although you didn’t care about city much, you did care about liverpool. you couldn’t stand anything about them or the things they did. their chants, players, jerseys, and even liverpool as a city.
“no, no, never.” he smiled nervously.
“then what is it?” you put your hand on your hip, “spit it out.”
“i debut for city in two weeks, today.” he said while scratching the back of his head, looking around your room once more.
you don’t react right away, you weren’t sure if he was trying to say that he didn’t want to see you anymore because if it or if he hoped you didn’t have a problem with it.
“oh.” you said softly, “i, uh, i don’t really care for the rivalry between city and united, honestly.”
“really?” he tapped on your vanity, “so you’re like a manchester both?” he smiled up at you.
“i wouldn’t say that,” you laughed, “i don’t support city, but i don’t hate them either.”
“and here i was about to invite you to my debut.” he playfully joked.
“i guess i’ll be a city fan for a day if it’s for you,” you stretched the word “guess” at the end, “only for you though.”
he blushed, trying to cover his smile, “mind if i lay?”
you snapped back into reality, “oh yeah, sorry, go ahead.” you said while following behind him to your bed.
and that’s how you ended up here, almost five years later. two kids, a ring, and a home together. it was another very important game, not only was it the EFL cup, but it was the semi-finals and it was between city and united.
you would usually avoid the two games as to not cause phil to feel bad for choosing the other side and secretly cheering for them, but also to not piss your family, who was always at united vs city games, off. they knew phil and loved him, but only when football wasn’t the subject.
“daddy!” your oldest son, ronnie, said while pointing at phil. he was only one, but his first word was “daddy” and it was all he would say.
“yes baby, that’s daddy.” you say, patting his head.
you spent the whole game at the edge of your seat, everytime phil would gain control of the ball you bit your lip, knowing how dangerous he was with it. you would also tense up whenever you saw united gain possession and move towards the goal.
unfortunately for you, the game ended in a defeat and win for you. it was 2-0, city two, united zero. you were still excited nonetheless, especially for phil.
you jogged over to the field where he was, including the mascot. you hugged him while holding ronnie in your arms.
“we’re so proud of you my love.” you kiss him on the lips.
“thank you, sorry about that by the way.” he whispers in your ear, giving your forehead a peck, as well as ronnie’s.
