Weekly New Record Review 7.17
Swirling in a mighty wall of sound; Foals new album is just as it says it is, a holy fire, unstoppable and furiously enjoyable. Holy Fire, this Oxford quintets’ third studio album goes through multiple waves of atmospheric climax, reaching themes Pumpkins-esque in their cathartic nature. The energy is definitely not left behind anywhere; whether it is brought alive with invigorating intensity on tracks like “Inhaler” and “My Number” or bubbling under the surface yearning to be set free with the track “Late Night”. These creatures of unusual habit know how to bury themselves in your heart and erupt on every song at just the right time.
Songs like “Late Night” cut you to the core and reach you on an intrinsic level. Lyrics such as, “I'm the last cowboy in this town, empty veins and my plastic broken crown, they said I swam the sea that ran around, they said I once was lost but now I'm truly found and I know the place another way, I feel, I feel no shame…” are a true example of a primal temperament. Holy Fire is a delight; an album one should not miss, the ebullient sound appearing to have a mind of its own - “Inhaler” mixed with its emotive lyrics and “Bad Habit” bringing you down and thrusting you right back up like a roller coaster ride.
Come one and all and get on the wondrous ride that is Holy Fire; you’re sure to be hooked!
