Usually the two would enter the room at different times in the night, both reasonably exhausted from a long day. Tonight, it seemed like neither of them could sleep. Sakura found herself tossing back and forth in her bed. Although her body felt weary, her mind couldn’t seem to be at ease. She looked at her digital wristwatch, it was almost 3am. She hadn’t eaten since dinner and began to feel the pain in her abdomen. Deciding that sleep would only be more of a struggle on an empty stomach, Sakura reached into her purse which she’d left at the foot of her bed and pulled out a package of seaweed snack. She didn’t worry the noise would wake her roommate, Sakura could hear the unsteady breaths and squirms that could only come from another struggling to rest.Â
“Hey. Soojin. I can hear your belly rumbling. Do you want any seaweed? It might help you sleep better.” Sakura whispered, a regular voice at this time felt too peculiar. It only shattered the stillness of night. They all needed to sleep their best to do their best in the morning. No one should be dragging them down. It was almost a necessity to look out for Soojin, rather than a curtesy. Sakura blinked at the little blob on the bed beside her, her eyes were still adjusting to the slight differences in shades of grey in the dark room.
