You glanced up at the clock. Dean had called you about three hours ago asking if they could drop off a friend who needed looking after. He said his name was Kevin and that he's had a hell of a year. Apparently this poor kid had been kidnapped several times, and so had his mother, which is where the Winchesters were headed. They had caught a lead in West Virginia and the boy needed a safe place to lie low while they looked into it.
You had met the Winchesters two years ago in Michigan right after your friend Kevin Tran went missing. Wait, wasn't that the name of the kid you'd be looking after? You shook your head as it couldn't possibly be him. The Kevin you knew was the same age as you, not a 'kid' like Dean kept calling him. And besides, Tran was gone; two years is a long time to be just missing.
You had moved to Vienna, Illinois to get away from all the memories of your best friend, and the disapproving looks of your neighbors in Neighbor, Michigan. You had been in AP classes with Kevin but when he disappeared all desire to go to college left with him. The people in your town didn't understand. Your eyes stung as the tears started to form. You missed the cute, smart, and funny gamer-boy. He was dating, what-was-her-face, ... Channing, before he vanished and you never got to tell him how you felt.
There was a knock at the door, you wiped the stray tear that had fallen down your cheek with the back of your hand. You grabbed the small dish of clear liquid and opened the door. Dean and Sam pulled down the collars of their shirts to reveal pristine anti-possession tattoos. You nodded and extended the bowl which they both dipped their fingers in.
“Well, since you aren't screaming or hesitating to put your fingers in the holy-salt-borax dish, you're good. So, where's the little tyke I'm babysitting?” you asked stepping aside to let the boys in. As they stepped in, you looked to the person standing behind them. Your heart stopped, the bowl in your hand crashed to the ground.
There stood Kevin, not the seven or eight year old you thought you were looking after but the adult Kevin Tran.
“K-K-Kevin?” you asked in a hushed tone, in case he would disappear again if you asked any louder.
“Not what you were--” Dean started to comment but stopped when you wrapped your arms around Kevin's shoulders.
“Hey YN/N,” he whispered in your ear as he tightly hugged you back.
You lingered in the hug just a tad longer, you could feel the tears running down your cheeks. “You're alive. You're really here,” you tried to hold back another wave of tears. “I... I looked... I searched, I-- wait! You've been alive for these last two years and you didn't bother to get a hold of me?” You looked at him questioningly. You were happy he was alive but there was a bit of annoyance building up. You turned and glared at the Winchesters. “Why didn't you tell me? You knew I was looking for him. Why didn't you tell me you were looking for Ms. Tran? I could have helped!”
You looked back and forth between them, you felt so lost. These last few years were hell for you and by the sound of it, it was also hell for the Trans. You could have helped them, helped protect them or helped find them, or at least been there for them. The tears you were trying to hold back, broke through and streamed down your face. “I'm sorry. I just...”
“No, I'm sorry. I haven't contacted anybody for their own safety. Those who know I'm alive are in danger or all ready dead,” Kevin responded while looking at the ground.
“Your mother's fine. Sam and Dean will find her, bring her home, safe and sound, and not dead,” you glanced up at Kevin, hoping you were convincing enough to take a fraction of weight off his shoulders.
“Channing -- Crowley killed her,” he mumbled still looking at the ground.
“I'm so sorry Kev,” you pulled him into another hug.
“It's okay, happened awhile ago. Hurts but just don't want anybody else to die because of me.”
You gave him a small reassuring smile, “Well, you don't have to worry about me. Believe it or not, I'm pretty good with all this unnatural stuff.”
You looked over at the Winchesters, “You guys aren't off the hook yet, but there's beer in the fridge and some ribs, which might be cold by now. Won't take long to heat them up if they are.” You made your way to the tiny kitchen table to check on the ribs.
“Actually, we should get going. Long drive,” Dean smirked at you and started to head towards your door. “Let the two of you catch up.” He flashed a grin at you and waved. You could have sworn he had a knowing look in his eye, but that was impossible. Dean could be dense at times, how could he have picked up that you had a thing for Kevin that quickly?
“Wait,” you called back to the brothers. You took one of the Styrofoam containers out of the bag and handed it to Sam, “I bought enough for four of us.” You leaned on the door jamb as they waved at Kevin over your shoulder. “Hey, if you need my help just call me, okay? Please? Ms. Tran means a lot to me too.”
Dean smiled and gave you a bear hug, “Alright Kiddo. We'll call.” He lowered his voice and whispered into your ear, “Go, make up for the last two years.”
You smiled up at him, shaking your head, your cheeks turning a slight shade of pink. You closed the door behind them and turned to Kevin. “I'm glad your safe Kevin,” you smiled and gave him another tight hug, resisting the urge to kiss him. “Hungry? I should be able to throw something together that you can eat.”
“Thought you had ribs for four?” he tilted his head questioningly.
“Yeah but...” now you were confused, “vegetarian?”
“Not for a couple of years now,” he chuckled.
You smiled and began to preheat the oven. “So, looks like we have a bit to catch up on.”
The next hour you caught each other up on your lives over ribs, steamed vegetables and garlic mashed potatoes. Most of the time you spent smiling, even during the horrible stories, you just couldn't believe he was sitting across from you. Not only was he alive, but he was in your home, in your kitchen. You were protecting him.
After your dinner, you gave him the short tour of your place. It was small, but it was yours. You had used your college fund to buy this little house on the outskirts of town. You had debated on renting, but with the sigils painted everywhere, you didn't want to deal with a landlord. It had one bedroom, a small bathroom, and a kitchen that opened into the living room. You shrugged after the five minute tour.
He laughed, “It's nice, but,” he pointed at a sigil, “what does that one mean?”
Your gaze followed to where he was pointing, a curtain with hand embroidered writing that hung in front of the living room window. “Oh, it's an older version of Sanskrit. Basically it's a protection blessing. Figured it wouldn't hurt to have with all the other protection spells and sigils,” you answered and turned back just in time to see him yawn. “Tired?”
He smiled and nodded, “A bit.”
You nodded back at him. You grabbed his bag that he dropped by the door, swatting off his attempt to take it from you, and carried it to your room. “There's an extra pillow and some blankets in the closet on the top shelf if you need.”
He looked to the closet, then to the bed, then his eyes settled on you, “I can't take your bed.”
“You can and will,” you smile at him. “I'll be on the couch if you need me,” you walked over and gave him a hug before grabbing pajamas from your dresser. Before you left, you looked over your shoulder at him, “I'm really glad that you're alive and okay. I've missed you.” He looked like he was about to say something, but he closed his mouth and looked down at his bag. You shut the door behind you softly.
You lay on your couch in your pj’s replaying the events of the day in your head. You had told him briefly about the last two years, but there was still a lot to share, and you didn't think that he understood just how much you missed him. Of course he didn't, he didn't like you the way you liked him, loved him. You could feel the tears start to well up again.
You sit up on the couch and open the music application on your tablet. You made sure the volume was turned on low, so you didn't disturb Kevin's sleep, before pushing the random and play buttons. You laid back down and chuckled as 'Carry On Wayward Son' started to play. You were trying to lay your weary head to rest and trying not to cry 'no more'.
You laid there for a few more songs, trying to get comfortable on the couch. You let out a sigh as you stared up at your ceiling; yeah, there was no way you were going to let any guest sleep on this heap of springs and stuffing. You had made up your mind to buy a new couch when you heard the door of your room open.
You heard the footsteps coming closer to the couch, you closed your eyes trying to decide if you should ask if he needed anything or pretend to be asleep so he wouldn't worry about the sleeping arrangements. You felt a lock of your hair move and his soft lips against your forehead.
“I've missed you, too,” he whispered before sighing. You strained to hear if there was any movement, but after a few seconds you heard Kevin whisper again, “I was an idiot.”
You didn't understand what he meant, and the only thing you could think of quickly was a soft yawn and a 'hmm' as if you just stirred from your slumber. You licked your lips and smacked them, “What was that?”
Kevin stammered trying to think of something.
You looked up at him through the dark, “It sounded like the smartest guy I know called himself an idiot, but I was half asleep, so I can't be to sure.” You shifted to turn on a dim lamp that sat on an end table next to the couch while bringing your legs up to sit 'Indian Style' and patted the spot next to you.
Kevin hesitated for second before he sat down. He leaned forward and put his elbows on his knees. He sat there looking at his clasped hands not saying anything. Ed Sheeran's 'Kiss Me' softly playing in the background.
Settle down with me
Cover me up
Cuddle me in
Lie down with me
And hold me in your arms
“Hey, it's me, you can tell me whatever is on your mind. I know we both have changed in the last two years, but you will always be my best-friend, Kev, and I'll always be yours,” you whispered encouragingly.
He turned his head sharply to look at you, “Really?”
Settle down with me
Cover me up
Cuddle me in
“Wh-what?” the sudden head turn and question caught you off guard. 'Really' what? Was he really asking if you were still his friend?
Lie down with me
And hold me in your arms
Your breath hitched, you meant that you would always be his friend, but now you could feel your face flush. You hoped the light was dim enough that he wouldn't see. You had to think fast: explain what you really meant or finally let him know how you really felt about him. It was your turn to cast your gaze downward, you closed your eyes and whispered, “Yes.” Your heart was pounding, you weren't sure how he would interpret your answer.
And your heart's against my chest, your lips pressed to my neck
I'm falling for your eyes, but they don't know me yet
And with a feeling I'll forget, I'm in love now
Kevin was silent, turning your answer over and over in his head.
Your nerves were getting the better of you and you couldn't stop your leg from bouncing, “I'm sorry.”
“Why?” he asked quietly, still looking at you.
Kiss me like you wanna be loved
You wanna be loved
You wanna be loved
This feels like falling in love
Falling in love
We're falling in love
You raised your head to look at him again. Your eyes met his and there was no anger or disgust like you thought there would be, but it looked like sadness. You tried to say something, but the look in his eyes made you feel a twinge in your heart.
Settle down with me
And I'll be your safety
You'll be my lady
“Why are you sorry?” the look in his eyes made you feel even worse.
I was made to keep your body warm
But I'm cold as the wind blows so hold me in your arms
Oh no
My heart's against your chest, your lips pressed to my neck
I'm falling for your eyes, but they don't know me yet
And with this feeling I'll forget, I'm in love now
“Because you're my best friend. I'm sorry, this is not the way I wanted you to find out. I'm so sorry. It's been two years since I've seen you and I wanted to tell you back then, but I was scared. I'm still scared. I'm an idiot. I don't want to lose you again. I don't want to lose our friendship. I don't think I could deal with it again if I lost you. I'm sorry, I love you, please don't hate me,” you started out strong but as you rambled on you got quieter ending in a whisper, out of breath and with tears starting to roll down your cheeks.
Kiss me like you wanna be loved
You wanna be loved
You wanna be loved
This feels like falling in love
Falling in love
We're falling in love
Kevin smiled, cupping your face with both his hands, his thumbs gently brushing the tears away. “No, I'm the idiot, remember?” He sighed, looking down, then back up, locking eyes with you, “I should have let you know I was alive. You are my closest friend, I shouldn't have put you through that.”
Yeah I've been feeling everything
From hate to love
From love to lust
From lust to truth
I guess that's how I know you
So I hold you close to help you give it up
His hands on each side of your face made it difficult, but you tried to shake your head, “I understand, you don't have to apologize for that.”
So kiss me like you wanna be loved
You wanna be loved
You wanna be loved
This feels like falling in love
Falling in love
We're falling in love
“No, you don't understand. I liked Channing, but I didn't love her. I went out with her because I was afraid of losing you as a friend. I was an idiot. You've been there for me for so many years, and I wasn't there for you when you needed me the most. I'm not going to let that happen again,” with every sentence he leaned forward until his lips were barely brushing against yours. “I've always loved you,” he whispered before pressing his soft lips against yours.
Kiss me like you wanna be loved
You wanna be loved
You wanna be loved
This feels like falling in love
Falling in love
We're falling in love
It was a soft, slow, loving kiss, one that you thought was only possible in romantic-comedies between actors. One of the hands that was on your cheek slowly slid into your H/C hair, holding the back of your head. Your arms encircled Kevin's shoulders, shifting to sit on his lap so you could be closer to him.
You both broke for air, smiling at each other. His thumb still rubbing against your cheek. You both started to laugh as Queen's 'You're My Best Friend' starts to play, and you rested your forehead against his.
“Have I ever told you that you have a great taste in music?” he chuckled.
“Just wait until it randomly chooses a song by a kid from Michigan playing a cello,” you smiled at him.
“I take that back, you have horrible taste in music.”
You stuck your tongue out at him. He used the opportunity to press another kiss against your lips, his tongue playing with yours. You pulled his body to yours, your hands sliding down his chest to his waist. You smiled into the kiss before you started tickling him. You couldn't help but laugh at the yelp he made.
“Well, I'm glad that didn't change about you Tran. Still ticklish and adorable,” you smiled at him.
He slightly blushed at being called adorable then grinned, “If memory serves me right, you are ticklish too.”
“Your memory is slipping in your old age,” you bit your lower lip, the corners of your lips curling upwards.
“Is that right? So, this won't affect you one bit?” he asked before his hands shot to your rib cage and started tickling relentlessly.
You squealed and jolted backwards, trying to get away. You tried to push his hands away, leaning backwards while laughing. You ended up lying on your back, tears forming from laughing so hard.
Kevin hovered over you for a split second before his lips crashed down to meet yours again. You smiled up at him, brushing a lock of his hair back, “I've missed you so much.”
“And I you,” he beamed back at you. Stifling a yawn, he chuckled, “Sorry.”
“Come on, back to bed with you. The Winchesters won't be happy with me if you're more tired when you leave than when you got here,” you gently push against his chest making him sit up.
“I think Dean would be,” he smirked, “but we probably have some time before I have to go back.”
You propped yourself up on your elbows and blushed, “you are probably right on both accounts. So sleep now and we can catch up more tomorrow morning?”
“Sure,” he stated as he momentarily got lost in his own thoughts, “on one condition.”
You raised an eyebrow out of curiosity, “And what would that be Tran?”
“Answer me truthfully, Y/N,” he said as he waited for your nod. “Are you really comfortable on this couch?”
A giggle escaped your lips as you answered him, “No, not really.”
He nodded at your response and stood up. Leaning over, he wrapped one arm behind your back and the other under your knees.
You give a little yelp and wrapped your arms around his neck as he lifted you up. You looked up at him in confusion, silently asking him what he was doing.
Kevin smiled warmly at you, “We are sharing... Um, if that's all right with you?”
You smiled at him, snuggling into the crook of his neck, and whispered, “I get to be the big spoon. Not letting you disappear for another two years.”
“Then tomorrow I get to be the big spoon?”
