the late spring sun had dipped just below the horizon, leaving the sky awash in apricot, lavender, and soft gold. you leaned against levi’s chest on the porch of the countryside cottage, knees drawn up, patch curled in the small hollow between them, tail thumping lazily against the wood. the breeze was gentle, carrying the faint scent of wildflowers from the surrounding fields.
levi’s arm draped lightly over your shoulders, his hand brushing along yours, firm and steady, grounding you in the quiet warmth of the evening. you rested your head against his chest, listening to the slow rise and fall of his breath, feeling the subtle warmth of his body through the cream sweater you were both wearing in matching chaos.
“you know” you murmured, eyes following a butterfly drifting lazily across the field, “i can’t believe how perfect this spring has been.”
levi shifted slightly, his free hand moving to press against yours more firmly. “it’s fine,” he said, gruff, but you could feel the weight behind his words, the careful comfort in his tone.
“no, i mean it,” you said, tilting your head up to meet his gaze. “from early spring, to popcorn fights, to patch tearing through our lives, to this… the sunsets, the flowers, the fields. you’ve been here the whole time.”
levi exhaled through his nose, corner of his mouth twitching faintly. “you’re making this sentimental,” he said, though his eyes softened in a way he probably thought you wouldn’t notice.
“and?” you teased, brushing your fingers lightly along the back of his hand. “do you mind?”
“i don’t,” he admitted quietly. “i like it,” he added after a pause, the corner of his lips lifting slightly.
patch stretched, pawing lightly at your ankle, tail thumping against the porch. you reached down to ruffle his fur, and he barked softly in contentment, as if agreeing with your words. levi’s hand absently ruffled the puppy’s head, careful, deliberate.
you tilted your head against him. “i never want this to end,” you whispered.
levi’s fingers threaded through your hair, holding you close. “neither do i,” he said, voice low, gruff, but honest.
you smiled against his chest, squeezing his hand gently. “i mean, even with your grumpy scowls, and patch’s chaos, and all our messes…it’s perfect. you make it perfect.”
levi let out a quiet, reluctant huff, faintest ghost of a smile tugging at his lips. “you’re impossible,” he muttered.
“and you love me anyway,” you teased, brushing your nose against his.
“maybe,” he admitted quietly, exhaling through his nose. then he leaned down, pressing a slow kiss to your temple, careful, deliberate, grounding. “especially because of him,” he added, nodding at patch, who was now trying to crawl between your laps, tail thumping furiously.
you laughed softly, picking patch up and resting him on your lap. “we’re perfect,” you whispered. “you, me, patch, the sun, the fields…all of it.”
levi shifted so he could rest his chin on the top of your head. “yeah,” he said softly. “fine. i’ll allow it.”
you tilted your head up and pressed a brief kiss to his cheek. “you know, it’s moments like this… when it’s just us and patch… i feel like we could stay here forever.”
levi’s hand slid to cradle the back of your head again, fingers brushing your hair lightly. “maybe we could,” he murmured. “if you want to push me, i won’t complain.”
you grinned, leaning into him further. “i’m not even pushing. i just…i want this. you, me, patch. the fields. the quiet. the light.”
“fine,” he said again, quieter this time. “i get it.”
patch yawned and snuggled closer between your laps, paws kneading gently at your sweater. levi’s hand went down to rest over yours, brushing patch’s fur with the other, a perfect balance of calm, warmth, and subtle chaos.
the sky darkened slowly, violet and rose melting together above the fields. fireflies began flickering among the tall grass, and you reached over to link fingers with levi, holding on just a little tighter.
“you really are impossible,” he muttered softly, though his grip on your hand tightened.
“and you…love me anyway,” you countered, smiling, resting your forehead against his chest.
“i suppose,” he said, voice low, almost reluctant, but the small curve of his lips betrayed him. “i like this. all of it. you, him, us… patch. even this sunset.”
you laughed softly. “all three of us, then?”
“all three of us,” levi echoed, finally letting the corner of his lips lift fully in a quiet smile.
you leaned into him, pressing a soft kiss to his shoulder, and he returned it with a slow, careful squeeze around you. patch yawned again, curling tighter, and you smiled down at him, brushing his fur.
the world outside faded into quiet: the fields, the fading sunlight, the gentle rustle of leaves, the soft chirping of distant birds. nothing existed but the three of you, grumpy, chaotic, steady, and utterly yours.
you pressed a light kiss to levi’s chest again. “i never want this to end,” you whispered.
“neither do i,” he said, voice low and certain, hand brushing along your back as he held you close, thumb stroking the back of your hand. “not if i can help it.”
the three of you stayed that way for a long while. you laughed quietly when patch wriggled, curled closer, and yipped softly. levi’s fingers absently ruffled the puppy again, muttering something gruff under his breath about “this ridiculous dog,” but the fondness was clear.
you tilted your head up to look at levi. “promise me we’ll keep doing this,” you murmured. “even when spring ends. even when life gets messy.”
he looked down at you, eyes soft but steady. “i promise,” he said simply. “all three of us. always.”
the last of the golden light faded from the horizon, replaced by soft violet twilight. stars began to twinkle above the fields, and you felt your heart settle into the quiet warmth of the moment. levi’s steady presence, patch’s little snores, and the gentle wind brushing through the flowers, it all felt infinite.
and for the first time, you let yourself believe it. some moments really were endless.
“i never want this to end,” you whispered once more.
“neither do i,” levi murmured back, holding you and patch close, the three of you wrapped in the soft, quiet eternity of late spring.
