Well i just watched the new Castlevania series on Netflix and now i’m AN EMOTIONAL WRECK so please have this calla lily vampire I drew recently as a placeholder I WILL BE DRAWING MORE THINGS SOON OOOHHH YES I WILLLL but only this girl for now :) though eventually i’d like to do a whole series of vampires based on poisonous flowers i think.
I’m gonna start infodumping about flowers because you gave me permission to<3. And we’re going to talk about poisonous flowers today!!!! Gather round everyone it’s time for Saiph’s Flower Rants.
Now, hemlock is associated with necromancers and witches. Wicked, right? But in flower language itself, it means “You’re gonna kill me”. Isn’t that awesome I love flowers!!!!
Fun fact: all the parts of hemlock of poisonous, but the extra poisonous part is the seeds, to both humans and to animals. The two main kinds is water hemlock and poison hemlock, but they’re slightly different flavors of poison.
Another fun fact: poison hemlock was used by ancient greeks to murder criminals. The most famous of these was Socrates!!
The most common symptoms of the poison from hemlock is dizziness, pupil dilation, and shaking. Usually this is followed by a slowed heartbeat, and paralysis of the central nervous system and muscles.
ANYWAY moving on: Oleander!! I love oleander, because it’s flower symbolism is absolutely so fun. It means destiny, charm, everlasting love, but is also a symbol of caution!!
Fun fact: All parts of oleander are also poisonous!! Only if you eat or chew it, however. Not just from touching it. The symptoms include blurred vision, general vision weirdness, diarrhea, loss of appetite, nausea, stomach pain, disorientation, drowsiness, confusion, fainting, headaches, skin rashes, an irregular heartbeat, and general weakness.
There was a story in greek mythology about how a man named Leander and some woman fell in love. Leander drowned, and the woman cried “Oh, Leander,” and took the flower from his hand. Through the power of love he reawakened.
