Summary: Some, like Pride, looked and saw only the surface interactions, but that was where the Hero of Ishval and the Hawkâs Eye failed. Intimacy was a condition that the best poker face could not mask. And Mustang was no exception to the rule: Men in love were fools, risking ruin to indulge their own desires. And at the very heart of the issue, Wrath knew because he and his wife were not so different.

âWhocrapped in your coffee this morning?â Maes asked him as Roy sullenly took a sipfrom his to-go coffee mug. âYouâve been in a grump all day.â
âHavenot,â Roy replied petulantly. He knew he had and the reason for that wassitting on the opposite side of the staff room. His gaze lingered on the womanfor longer than it should have, and Maes noticed.
âAh,â hereplied, his tone suggesting all had currently been revealed to him. The soundof laughter drifted across to them and Roy tensed, causing Maes to chuckle athis expense. âSo, itâs Riza again. Isnât it?â
âNo,â Royreplied, but it was a little too quick.
Maes chuckledand Roy wanted to hurl his coffee at him. The man was infuriating, and Roy wasnâtsure why he hung around with him. Friend or no, he was a pain in Royâs ass who actedas if he had Roy all figured out. Either that, or Roy just let slip his truefeelings in his mannerisms too easily.
Yeah, definitelythe last one. Maes was smart, but he wasnât thatsmart. And he certainly didnât have Roy all figured out, thatâs for sure.
âYes, it is,â Maes smirked, leaning back inhis chair, steepling his fingers as he rested his elbows on the armrests. Hisvoice took on a condescending tone. âOh, did someone get rejected from a date?Did the great Roy Mustang finally get shot down?â
With a growlRoy grabbed his papers and coffee. âShut up,â he scowled, adding more fuel toMaesâ fire. His friend simply laughed loudly, drawing attention to them.Deciding his coffee would taste better in his classroom, Roy headed towards theexit.
Unfortunately,he had to pass Riza in order to get out the door.
Van Hohenheim, teacher of Religious, Moral, and Ethical Studies, was making her laugh and Roythought about how nice it sounded.
How you would like to makeher laugh like that, you mean.
âShut up,âhe muttered at the voice in his head.
âHey, Roy,âRiza greeted, turning from Hohenheim. Her eyes danced with amusement, her smileradiant, causing his stomach to flutter.
âHello,Roy.â Hohenheim offered his own smile. âRiza, Iâll speak to you later. I needto prepare for my next class.â
âOkay, seeyou later,â she bid with another friendly smile.
Was it friendly, or was it toofriendly?
âHow wasyour lunch?â she asked.
âAll right,âhe replied. âSorry, I need to go.â
He feltslightly bad about leaving her there, but he wasnât in the mood to listen toMaes who was still laughing or dealwith the fact someone else might like Riza like he did.
Oh my god.Was he jealous?
No, he wasnâtjealous. He wasnât. He was â
Oh my god,he was.
The knotin his stomach twisted tighter at the revelation.
This⌠thiswas not good. He needed to get out. He needed to escape. Another epiphany wason its way to the front of his mind and he couldnât realise it now, not with somany people watching.
Roy, youâre being an idiot. You know that, right?Hohenheim is married and has two kids.
He was an idiot.
Not quite believinghe had let his thoughts and emotions run away from him like that, he coughed inembarrassment as he descended the stairs to the ground floor corridor to beginthe long walk to the opposite end of the school.
To makematters worse, he had Hohenheimâs kid in his next class. Edward Elric was agifted student who hated Roy for a reason he had yet to comprehend. The boy hadnâtsaid anything to him directly, however, Roy had seen the graffiti in the bathrooms. While Edwardâs words wereincredibly creative and descriptive â something that made English teacher Maes Hughesincredibly impressed and proud of Ed â they were not the most pleasant. And Royknew it was him. He would recognisethose chicken scratches anywhere. His tests were barely legible however Royknew every answer would be right. The kid had a gift with chemistry. It was toobad he didnât apply it to other aspects of his life, like respecting hiselders. The worst part was, Ed knewthat every answer would be right as well.
Grumblingto himself as he retreated to his classroom, Roy sullenly thought about how he couldnâtcatch a break lately.
First, hethought Hohenheim â a happily married man with two kids, one of which Roytaught â was getting too friendly with Riza. It was only too friendly because you didnât want it to be. She washappy to talk to him. You wanted it to be you making her laugh like that. Secondly, he just discovered that hemight actually be jealous because he was too nervous to talk to Riza himselfand venture into the territory of possibly going out to do something out ofschool hours, rather than chaperone a trip to the science centre in CentralCity together. That had been an experience, and not the good kind. In short, itended with Roy chasing down a chicken that had somehow, magically, come free from an exhibit while a certain golden haired teenagercackled madly to himself while Riza watched with a smile and shook her head.
That smilehad made it all worth it.
The momentof clarity hit him in that instant, clutching his now cold coffee, the grip onhis papers now crumping them into a mess.
He wasjealous because he was in love with Riza.
It allmade sense. It was idiotic, jealousy had no part in his life, but regardless,it was there, and it just confirmed feelings he had been hiding from since he mether. There had always been something between them, but neither were botheredabout it or interested in taking it further. Well, thatâs what he thoughtanyway.
He was⌠inloveâŚ
Oh, shit.
âRoy?â heheard Riza call to him.
Cringingat the unexpected conversation â and therefore requiring a bullshit reason asto why he had appeared to be in such a bad mood leaving the staff room â Roy turnedand gave her what he hoped qualified as a smile and not a constipated look. âAreyou okay?â
âYeah, ofcourse. Why?â he replied automatically. The question had been asked without thinking, and he was regretting it now. That three-letter word opened up an excuse for Rizato turn it back on him and ask why he was in such a foul mood.
âYou seemâŚOff. Is something bothering you?â
Yes. âNo.â
Riza eyedhim critically, approaching him. He felt himself straighten when she wasfinally in front, the faint smell of her perfume wafting pleasantly towardshim. The papers he was holding under his arm were clutched tighter. Very soonthey would be a lost cause.
âSomethingis bothering you. I know it is.â
Royresisted the urge to squirm underneath her gaze. Once he finally met her eyes,he was pulled in by their warm caramel colour. Oh, how he would love to losehimself in those eyesâŚ
Rizaâs expressionsoftened and she smiled, as if she finally figured out what was wrong. He felthimself sweat, his shirt sticking to his back uncomfortably. âDo you want totalk about it?â
âNo.â Well, that was a pathetic squeak, wasnât it?
âNot evenover coffee tonight, after â and outside of â school?â she asked. Roy blinkedin surprise back at her. That was not⌠what he expected.
âUh, yeah.Sure,â he replied, feeling very graceful as he stuttered over his words. Rizaâssmile was bright, a knowing look crossing her face. Did she just â
The shrillring of the bell signalling the end of their lunch hour almost cut off herreply. âItâs a date.â With a grin she turned around, heading back the way shecame.
A date. Roy grinned to himself, feeling slightly idiotic in theslowly filling hallway. However, nothing would put a damper on his afternoonnow. He had a date with Riza Hawkeye tonight.

Send me an AU and iâll tell you 5 of my headcanons for it: The classics never die. Coffee Shop AU. Fullmetal Alchemist.
Ahahaha, itâs funny you say this! Iâm actually writing a coffeeshop au for my ot3 (which is also a flower shop au) Family of the Heart is the title on ao3 and Iâve been working on the next chapter slowly!
So for a different pace... Why not a Cat Cafe AU with Scar?
-Scar runs a little cat cafe that serves ishvallan style coffee and also helps gets kitty cats adopted. His brother runs it with him, helping on the finances/businessy end.
-Alphonse Elric works there as apart time after-school job. He loves the cats just as much as Scar does, and does his best to learn about taking care of them and customers.
-Scars favourite customer who comes in is a young Ishvallan scholar by the name of Miles. when itâs not busy, they spend hours talking to each other, debating philosophy and the like. Miles wants desperately to adopt a cat but always says his roommates wouldnât like it.
-Scar has a semi adopted daughter, Mei Chang, and she also helps at the cafe. She likes to come up with new ways to promote the store, but she tends to get distracted whenever Alphonse is around.
-Scarâs least favourite customer is Alphonseâs older brother, Edward who has a tendency to be loud an obnoxious. Worse, is when he comes in with his..... dad? brother?? uncle??? Mustang, who actually takes the 16 year olds bait and starts flame wars in his dining room.
-Scarâs arch rival is a coffee shop/espresso stand run by Kimblee, who is a ruthless business man, known for taking down little shops and replacing them with his overpriced luxury brand thatâs not even that good. Itâs very bitter and personal.
Iâm sorry this took me so long to get to, but I hope you still like them~
