Little dwarflings Fili and Kili, the new hope for the Line of Durin after Smaug's attack on Erebor.
I changed my prior idea of the dragonsick Durins a little. In case of Fili and Kili I thought that the dragon features could be caused by something else than the gold sickness.
A while ago mintdr and I had a conversation about how natural the horns and wings on Fili and Kili looked and that maybe they were born with them due to a genetic predisposition or a curse that runs in the Durin family. I really liked those thoughts and I had the following idea for this dragon-Durin AU concept:
A special ability runs in the line of Durin, most refer to it as 'the Curse of Durin' or 'the Dragon-Sickness'. It is a gene that can cause the body of an inheritor to transform, they grow several features of a dragon and can gain tremendous strenght - a protective mechanism in extraordinarily stressing or live threatening situations. Though once transformed, their bodies are not able to return back to their former appearance. With generations the gene appeared less and less as it is not passed down on every member of the Durin line. Some few cannot control their powers and lose themselves to the dragon inside of them. It also happened to Thorin's grandfather Thror who lost himself in an unsatiable desire for gold. At first this leads to the believe of many people that a curse has befallen the line of Durin. Though that changes as the gene is triggered in Thorin as well when Smaug attacks Erebor, giving him the strenght to protect his people while they flee. It is through him that the trust in the line of Durin is beginning to become restored. I'm thinking of Fili and Kili in this AU not as older and younger brothers, but as twins. Dis was already an adult when Smaug attacked Erebor and at the time pregnant with Fili and Kili. (Their father died during Samug's attack) The shock of that traumatizing experience as the dwarves of Erebor lost their home and the hard times they lived through after that tragedy took effect on her unborn babies. They felt her distress and transformed while still in her womb, a desperate attempt to protect their mother and themselves. While others are still thinking of the gene as a curse, the majority amongst the people of erebor see the birth of the two dragon princes as a new sign of hope. Well, this was the idea that I had. I hope you like it. Thanks for taking a look!~
