Florence Shaw’s lecture- Monday 5th December
To mark the start of the new project I attended a lecture by Florence Shaw. Florence Shaw is a free lance artist and illustrator and she said her main passion for illustration comes from it’s accessibility; in the sense that you can see the art for a small fee or for nothing at all.
Shaw mentioned that even from a young age she had been fascinated with drawing as when you create art you can make anything exist. This resonated with me as that was always what inspired me to create art as there is no limit to what you can create.
One of Shaw’s biggest focusses was on her use of different source material. She discussed how she uses different source material such as film, photography or life and that each create a different outcome. This is something that I want to investigate more into and instead of just drawing from photography I also want to experiment with different sources such as life.
Florence Shaw also mentioned how she used to keep a memory diary ; a small A6 sketchbook in which she would daily jot down drawings from her memory. This inspired me to consider creating my own memory journal in order to strengthen my memory sketches and also free up my art work.
Florence Shaw also touched on her technique of drawing from film which is what we did a workshop on with her after the lecture. Shaw noted how she finds drawing from film stimulates ideas and creativity and I can relate to this as i based part of one of my A level art projects on a film I had made in A level media. She mentioned collecting different elements from moving footage and combining them and this was an aspect I found really enjoyable in the workshop ; as I was able to use multiple aspects of a piece of film to create a new art piece.
